Tuesday, 12 December 2017

Rail Plus has revealed their ‘Top 5’ list of destinations and journeys, recording staggering interest in surprising places including Alaska, India and Scandinavia.

The findings were grouped into the following three categories.

Top 5 Journeys in 2017

  1. London to Paris
With its recent inclusion as part of Eurail Passes covering France and the Benelux region (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg), more travellers are taking advantage of the savings, darting between the two cities on the high-speed Eurostar.
  2. New York to Washington DC
Rail Plus recorded a 16% increase in Amtrak bookings this year, with reservations for the New York – Washington DC route being the most popular. It helps that route is scenic and train, comfortable and spacious!
  3. Amsterdam to Paris
Similar to the London - Paris Eurostar journey, Rail Plus observed a very similar hike in the Amsterdam – Paris route, tickets of which can be booked as point-to-point or as part of Eurail Passes covering France and the Benelux region.
  4. Barcelona to Madrid
Being one of the most visited destinations for Australian and New Zealand travellers, Spain’s popular cities of Barcelona and Madrid continue to retain their popularity in this market.
  5. Venice to Rome
Any visit to Italy is never complete without visits to Venice and Rome, and rail travellers continue to confirm this with the high volume of bookings between these two cities each year.

Top 5 Great Train Journeys in 2017

  1. Rocky Mountaineer
The Rocky Mountaineer remains Rail Plus’ top great train journey of all time, with all of its itineraries selling like hot cakes throughout the year. However, ‘The Journey through the Clouds Explorer with Pre Tour Cruise’ is a clear favourite.
  2. The Ghan
Rail Plus recorded an impressive 75% increase in interest in Australian rail journeys this year, with The Ghan Expedition travelling from the north to the south through the heart of the country recording the highest number of bookings.
  3. The Canadian
Bookings for Canada’s VIA Rail was up 45% this year, with The Canadian’s 3D/4N coast to coast Vancouver to Toronto itinerary proving the most popular route for travellers.
  4. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
Recording a whopping 106% increase in bookings this year, one of the world’s most famous great rail journeys, the Venice Simplon Orient Express is clearly a top favourite among Aussies and Kiwis looking to see Europe in luxury.
  5. Grand Train Tour of Switzerland
More and more travellers are taking advantage of the unbeatable value of the Swiss Travel Pass, which offers unlimited travel on all Swiss public transportation and other value adds. From the recorded 48% increase in bookings, the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland, which covers the country’s most scenic routes, received particularly high interest.

Top 5 Emerging Destinations for 2018

  2. British Columbia and Alaska
While cruises to Alaska have been extremely popular, there may be a shift to rail travel beginning, a much more affordable and accessible option for many travellers. Rail Plus recorded a 73% increase in Alaska bookings just this year alone, with an equally high interest in British Columbia and the general Pacific Northwest region.
