7. Eastern & Oriental Express

“Welcome aboard!” a steward warmly greets you, as you board the green & cream carriages in front of youInside, the polished wood-panelled corridors exude warmth & opulence. The steward opens the door to your cabin, your home for the next two nights. The intricate marquetry, fine fabrics and vintage touches leave you breathless. Special Agent, you are about to embark on a luxurious & slow train journey through Southeast Asia, on board the Eastern & Oriental Express.

The train departs Singapore and crosses over the Johor Causeway into the Peninsular Malaysia. You’re ready to indulge in a day of self-careAs the journey continues northward, you are served a refreshing afternoon tea in your cabin.

You decide to stretch your legs & explore the train. In the Saloon Car you pick up a book from the library and make your way to the Observation Car at the back of the trainThe open-air carriage is the perfect place to sit back, enjoy the view and get started on your bookYou watch from the back of the train as the tracks disappear into the distance.

Later in the evening, you dress for an exquisite dinner of eastern and western specialties in one of the three restaurant cars, followed by a cocktail in the Piano Bar Car, and have a wonderful time getting to know your fellow guests. It starts to get late and you retreat to your cabin, which has been transformed into an inviting bedroom. You call your 24 hour-steward for a nightcap. Today you’ve truly been able to unwind, ready for some adventure ahead.

The next day, as the train travels through the verdant rainforests & rural west-coast towns of Malaysia, your breakfast is served to you in your cabin. At Kuala Kangsar, you’re whisked away from the city to a rural village set among the rice paddies and surrounded by hills and mountains. You decide to join the Traditional Village Experience tour and are immersed into rural Malaysian life. Back on board by lunch time, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy as you please on the train.

On the last day, after breakfast, you disembark at River Kwai Station for your next excursion, a Culinary Tour. As you chop up peanuts in a traditional Thai cooking class, on a river craft sailing across the River Kwai, you realise the person next to you is Anne. She is the next traveller on your list to question about the missing Golden Ticket. You’ve been so immersed in your travels that it almost slipped your mind! You ask Anne if she knows anything that could be a clue. “Yes, I remember they opened up their wallet and there was a foreign currency in there. It definitely wasn’t Australian or New Zealand dollars”.

After arriving into Bangkok in the late afternoon, you leave the train feeling refreshed & ready to take on the bustling city.
