It was quite easy to use around the country .and we went for Green ,so reserving eas even easier .It would be great if extended days on the Pass were available. We had 25 days in Japan but could only get the max.21day Pass. So needed to pay for more rail travel.on top of JRPass.

The JR pass is a great way to explore Japan. You can use it to travel really long distances around the country. It is a still a good idea to book tickets using the pass at the station in advance if you can for some of the busy routes. The service and the pass are great for anyone on holiday in Japan

So good to have the opportunity to pre-pay before arriving. Sometimes it is a little confusing which lines you can and can't use them on and I am not sure whether we really had 7 calendar days worth but it still worked out cheaper than if we had to pay separately for every Bullet train.

We were in Japan for 2 weeks period. There are many tourist places are not covered by JR. You have to purchase subway ticket on top of what you have spent on JR. If you only plan to visit 1 or 2 cities, it's not worth to buy. You can purchase one off ticket in Japan. But worth to buy if you plan multiple trips using the bullet train.

Travelled numerous times on Shinkansen & other JR trains. Japanese rail system is very dependable & smooth. Only difficulty was having to wait in line for more than 1 hour at Shinjuku station to convert our receipts into full passes, THEN having to go to another office to book our seats. The Shinjuku pass office had too few people actually working & too many men in uniforms "supervising", so the waiting line moved very slowly. This system is too complicated & would benefit from being streamlined. Perhaps at other stations, this extensive waiting process is less. Why can't I just pay for a pass & make individual travel bookings on line, like I have done previously for rail travel in Europe?

From all recommendations I had and from the research I did I was told there was only one way to travel and that I must get a JR pass and that I was going to save a whole lot of money by having it. Absolutely not the case. My friend (who wasn't eligible for a JR pass) and I kept a tally of what she spent on tickets over the two weeks. I spent over $600 on the pass and she spent $450 in tickets. So I'm $150 out of pocket. Perhaps this changes as the peak travel seasons come about/trains are fuller etc whatever but I certainly wouldn't get it again myself. Especially since, with the exception of some trains in Tokyo, you are unable to use it on the city subway lines. However, was very easy to use and exchange initially - even if it is a giant piece of cardboard in your pocket.

This must be the 3rd or 4th time I have used the JR pass and it's great value. Just be sure you buy the right one as the regional passes can be good value, especially (say) if you fly in to Osaka and are only going to Kyoto / Nara / Hiroshima. There's a cheaper pass you can buy instead. But if you are doing more distant trips (like we did), you really can't beat it. FWIW, the Narita express train to/from the airport is only helpful if you are going to Tokyo Station or Shinagawa / Shinjuku. If you are staying in Asakusa district it's probably faster to get the Keisei Skyliner (not covered by JR pass).

Despite it being a peak holiday period in Japan and having no luck securing reserved seats on some Shinkansen trips there were always non reserved seats to be had so the JR Pass was still worth it. Hassle free to use by simply showing to the station staff as you pass through the lane. A must have for travel within Japan.

One of our group had a skiing accident and the JR staff were excellent. They helped with reserved seats and provided staff and a wheel chair to get us all back to the airport. I would highly recommend the JR rail pass if you are going to Japan. The rail system is great and the staff at the stations are incredibly helpful. We traveled from Yokohama-Osaka-Hiroshima-Toyko and using this pass for the bullet trains made the trip hassle free. Get the "green" pass so you can reserve seats. The green car is very comfortable and worth the extra few dollars. You'd be mad not to.

The Japanese rail system is fantastic - everything works perfectly, the trains are on time and connections are easily made. The staff are helpful, the carriages comfortable and the toilets clean. The system gives access to most parts of Japan, either on the Shinkansen or local trains, with much of the local network also being covered by the JRPass. Although you cannot use the pass through the swipe barriers, the manned gates are always available and the staff do not create any hold-ups. Although there can be queues for the exchange of the voucher for the railpass or to book seats, we have never struck any significant delays. The staff are knowledgeable, speak good English and complete the processing quickly. The savings over tickets bought within Japan are significant.

We activated our Japan Rail Pass the day after we arrived and used it every day for two weeks with the last use being Narita Express back to the airport. Moderator: "Hi Anthony, yes these passes need to be kept like cash as once they are issued they cannot be reprinted - if they are lost or stolen then this presents a problem. For that reason Rail Plus offers the Rail Protection Plan which provides a level of cover if your pass is lost or stolen while travelling."

The JR pass is awesome if you plan on traveling around Japan a bit. In our 14 days we traveled to a few different places so the pass was the most economical way to do that. If we had bought tickets individually it would've been a lot more expensive. Also love that if you get the wrong tickets (which we did once), you haven't lost money, you just get new tickets.

Once you have done a plan, do the sums - use a tool like Hyperdia to see what normal no pass travel is going to cost you. Buy the right pass (all Japan or just one sector). Tweak your plan around the pass duration. Check you know what it covers and what it doesn't (private rail & subway) Main benefits of rail pass: (1)Cheaper, (2) reserved seats are free (you will have to arrange them with helpful JR staff - write down what you want first) (3) fast - you can just show pass and hop on many trains including JR local trains (4) easy to exchange voucher for pass at entry airports and main cities (5) lots of web resources to help.

The JR Pass is definitely the best way to see Japan. So many options for train travel, including the shinkansen (bullet train). But not all local trains are JR, there are many private train lines. Be aware that you must have the entry stamp in your passport and only go to the midori (green) office *on the day* that you want to activate it because when it is activated the countdown starts. Also reserve your seats as early as possible, if you do not have reserved seats you can still get on the train but you might have to stand in the aisle (with all your luggage)!

The railpass was perfect. I used it on Shinkansen(bullet trains), local trains and ferries. Good value too. The only thing to be remembered is that there are no porters and few lifts in Japanese train stations, so for elderly or incapacitiated passengers, lugging large airline suitcases is a real drag, especially since train stations tend to be on at least two and sometimes three levels in Japan. So you need to plan your luggage carefully. Four wheels are necessary, and managing more than one large case is difficult without assistance. Conductors on Shinkansen are very helpful.Store your suitcase at the end of the carriage rather than trying to heft it into overhead racks.

Japan has one of the best and efficient rail systems in the world. Everything is extremely punctual, efficient, clean and safe. The bullet trains (Shinkansen) are by far the quickest way to get from city to city. The Japan Rail Pass also allows you to use normal intercity trains and some lines (JR) within the city. I found the use of the rail pass confusing. The reason being that I laboured under the impression that the pass could be used extensively. In actual fact there are at least 6 differently owned and operated rail systems in and out of tokyo. It just takes time to figure out which one can be used. I found that it wasn't great value for 7 days. I think 14 days plus would have worked better. The service was very good high quality.

The pass saves money if you use it a lot. The fast speed train is the best in the world. but you don't get a good view because it's noisy and they've built barriers. You have to show the pass many times before you get to your destination. We saved $300-$400 each during the week we were in Japan but we did a lot of travelling. Also, it doesn't apply to all your transport. There are trains, buses and ferries that you have to buy separate tickets for.

Japanese rail is very strange from the point of view that there are many different trains and rail routes that are owned and operated by different companies. This can be confusing or frustrating if you just want to get from one place to another. The Japan Rail Pass is great for travel on JR Lines only but these include Shinkansen trains and travel between most major places. It is very easy to use, just get it activated at one of the major JR stations and you're set to go. You can also activate it but ask for travel to start on a different date. For example, my wife and I had 7-day JR Passes but were going to be in Japan for 9 days. I wanted the pass to be valid on our last day in Tokyo so that we could use it to get to the airport so I activated it when we arrived at Kansai airport in Osaka but asked for the travel to start two days later. I paid separately to get from Kansai to the hotel in Osaka (which was fine because it was not on a JR line anyway) and then started our travel on the pass a couple of days later when we went to Kyoto. The other thing to realise is that JR lines do not run the subways in the cities (although some JR lines do run between locations in the city). This means that while you are in a particular city you will need to buy metro tickets and won't be able to use the JR Pass. This is very easy to do but the point is that you should not expect to buy a JR Pass and use it for all your travel. The other thing to realise is that you need to do more than just a one-way trip (say between Osaka and Tokyo) using the pass or it is cheaper just to buy a point-to-point ticket. But you will find that the pass is so convenient that you will deliberately go to other places because you can pop on and off the JR trains without having to purchase anything else. For example we went to Kamakura to see the Great Buddah for a day trip from Tokyo and went out near Mt Fuji on another day, all on the pass, as well as getting to the airport on the last day. So long as you understand the restrictions I have outlined, the Japan Rail Pass is excellent value and is very easy and convenient to use. I recommend you get one before travelling to Japan.

Once we reached Japan we got our exchange pass at the nearest Japan rail counter, which was convenient. We reserved our train seats at the same time which is a free service( green cabin-which is first class). The trains are on time like the .Lines are maked according to the cabin number. We had the green cabin & stood under green cabin sign even for the local trains. Trains are v clean. We made sure we Carried smaller luggage to be able to store them up above our seat. Large 30 Kg size luggage could not be stored above, No other luggage storage available for large cases . This is in the Green car( first class) There were people charging phones on the train.( socket available at the rear of the cabin. Had a great trip!! Highly recommend the pass as it saves heaps. Taxis are horrendously expensive!!

Time to actually get the rail pass on arrival was quite long but explanations were OK. Was not useable as much as we thought due to different ownership of rail lines. We had thought for example it covered all rail but it was only JR lines Unless you have been there you dont know. Pays to do,homework on what rail lines are there where you are going to decide if it is actually cost beneficial. Train standard was excellent and all on time.

The advice to get the Japan Rail Pass was possibly some of the best I received before visiting Japan. Having it, was not only a money saver, but a vast time saver as I was always able to head to the JR info or booking desk when I needed to organise the next ticket, rather than try to navigate the ticketing machines, various timetables and connecting travel options. The JR staff were hospitable and almost all spoke English, certainly more than my limited Japanese. I could not recommend this pass highly enough and Thank all JR staff for helping make my visit wonderful.

The pass is easy to use but the key problem is that you pay for a consecutive number of days travel, eg 7 or 14 days. Most people don't want to travel every day, and the pass is often USELESS in urban areas. The JR shinkansen ( very fast, intercity ) system is excellent, but within cities you still have to buy tickets for the privately-operated subway and tram lines. It would be much better value if the pass could be used for a total of 7 or 14 non-consecutive days, like an eurorail pass. If you don't want to travel every day and are a bit flexible about the time of day you travel, you get much better value from just buying shinkansen tickets when you need them and not paying for a reserved seat. They often seem to have very low occupancy rates, so you don't need to book ahead, just ask at the ticket office about vacancies the day before you want to travel.

This pass works really well if you are planning to travel a bit in Japan. Because we based ourselves in Kyoto for 2 weeks, we used it to travel to see other part of Honshu. We also took the bullet train to the south of Honshu, however the train spent about 60% of its time in tunnels, so we didn't get to see the countryside as much as we had hoped for that trip. Overall, we are still not sure if we got value for money, however it was a very easy to use pass and a great way to get around.

For longer distance travel around Japan, you can't beat the JR Pass. It is very well and widely recognised by JR staff, enabling fast and sometimes priority station entry and exit. Most JR staff have at least a few words of English and they will generally try to assist you in any way they can. Stations are dual language signed (Japanese and English), as are most internal information screens on the trains, making it easy to find your way around unfamiliar territory. Try to get at least one ride directly behind a local train service driver - watching the military-like precision of their work is absolutely fascinating. When in Tokyo, it's best to supplement your JR Pass with a local subway card (eg Suica), as JR does not give subway access (although there are a few JR lines around Tokyo). Suica cards are great value and can also be used in taxis and some shops.

Some stations its a pain to find the JR booths so u can walk through. Just weigh up the pros and cons and see if it is worth it for you. I've been to Japan over ten times studying and working there for about 7 years in all parts of the country. I'm not keen on writing reviews really but this one is a no brainer. If you only plan to visit one destination I.e. Tokyo and surrounding Kanto area (Yokohama-Chiba etc) then don't get a rail pass. But if you are travelling to more than one city in Japan and are going to catch the bullet train only once then the ticket pays for itself. To get the best value out of the ticket I'd recommend using the pass to check out Hiroshima, Himeji, Osaka, and Kyoto and Tokyo. On a recent trip I didn't take full advantage of the pass and didn't get the full value for money that you can get as I chose to stay longer in only two cities. it was still cheaper than the fares I would have paid though. But regardless of the value, the pass makes it so much easier as you don't have to line up for tickets, work out how much it's going to take to get to your destination, have correct change or always be updating your pre-paid train card, and cue for ticket gates. Particularly in Tokyo, which is a stressful buzz of activity, it takes the stress out as you just walk through flash your pass and your away. A few years ago it used to be a pain getting a pass. Now it's all done online and gets delivered to your door. Too easy. If your going to Japan, don't leave home without one.

I didn't have to figure out how much a JR rail ticket cost to get around Tokyo, I could get the Narita express from the airport, and I got to Kyoto and back.... if i had have planned my time better, i could have travelled further but just using the pass for these day trips and getting around on the metro was enough!! I wish you could get it for as long as you needed (rather than the set timeframes) but it is definitely worth the initial outlay - especially if you plan on travelling a lot when in Japan.

We purchased a 14day JR Pass, best value for money. We used our rail pass two three times a day, it got us to and from Narita airport, used to get around Tokyo, to Disneyland, travelled out of Tokyo, to Nikko, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima and many other places. Very easy to reserve seats, which made for hassle free travel. Plan you trip if you are going to a lot of main cities JR pass is a must. I added up all the cost of our train travel at the end of our trip it was over $2000 each. I would certain purchase a JR pass again if travelling to Japan

I would never travel without a Japan Rail Pass. It takes the worry out of getting to and from major city centres. The train system in Japan are without doubt some of the best in the world. They are highly efficient and extremely reliable so on the basis of that I strongly recommended using rail as a means of travel. Supported by an equally good and reliable ticketing system, the Japan Rail Pass.

It was exceptional value and we certainly got our money's worth. It really takes the hassle out of travelling throughout Japan and it certainly enhanced our holiday. Definitely recommended if you plan to travel more than Osaka-Tokyo return - everything after that is free. Add in a trip to Hiroshima, Nara and/or anywhere else and you're saving money and avoiding the minor inconvenience of buying additional tickets. Even the ferry to Miyajima was covered. My only complaint was that it only lasted for a week.

No issues with use, and JR staff are very friendly and helpful. Train is a great option in Japan, and I would definitely use these passes again on a return there. Unfortunately the JR pass is not valid for a sleeper birth on the Sapporo-Tokyo night train, but I would also recommend this if planning that journey. Very comfortable 2 person private carriage, slept very well, and they provide cool JR dressing gowns and slippers too. Showers were hot!

make sure you can use the jr pass in the arears you are going to spend a lot of time in. eg. we stayed in downtown Kyoto and the pass can't be used in the general area. The ticket machines are quite difficult to work out. In saying that when you use the jr pass you go straight to the person in the window and get good directions. The Shinkansens are beautiful. JR go in most major areas though. Also make sure you check your tickets dates when you book seats for longer trips. They sometimes get lost in translation with the japanese staff. always check.

A counter in the information office was where we needed to go to exchange our passes, once we had found this ( the sign in English was 50 mm by 10 mm) everything else became easy. Their high speed trains are fantastic, you could put a glass of water on the window sill at 275 km/h and you wouldn't spill a drop. Always book your seat if you can. Look at the Japanese people where they line up to enter the carriage and line up behind them. Carrying luggage, your bags storage areas are at the rear of the carriage in either specially designed areas or behind the last seats.

My wife and I are regular travellers to Japan and we don't go without a Japan Rail Pass. Usually we buy them from travel agents, but this was the first time to buy one on-line. I cannot fault the service and will always buy rail passes this way in future. The voucher for the pass arrived within 5 days (a record for us, so thanks Rail Plus!) As for the pass itself, nothing has changed over the 30 years I've been using Japan Rail Passes. The system of exchanging the voucher for the pass within Japan is simple, and then it only takes one or two trips to gain the confidence of going anywhere, anytime across Japan.

The JR rail pass made it very easy to get around. Exchanging papers for the real pass at Narita airport was simple. Finding JR ticketing offices was simple and mostly short lines. Travelling on trains was very comfortable. The trains were clean efficient and on time always. Not a lot of room for big luggage. The number of private lines in different cities not covered by JR pass was a bit disappointing and we were grateful to have a fluent Japanese speaker with us to reserve seats on shinkansen. We actually booked a Nozomi (not covered by JR pass) for our return trip Kyoto to Tokyo...much better than flying. Overall a great experience.

Trains in Japan are quiet, comfortable and on time. The bullet trains are a fantastic way to travel. We planned our travel using the hyperdia website and didn't find it necessary to book ahead in January. When using hyperdia Just make sure to go to search details and exclude private railway and the nozomi/mizuho/hayabusa Shinkansen as your JR pass does not cover these, and it does sometimes make a difference to travel times.

The Japan Rail Pass was a really convenient way to get about. We used it extensively over our 3 week stay to travel around Tokyo as well as to Mt Fuji, Kyoto, & Hiroshima. We had a green pass, but one of our dates of travel, 30 December, the busiest day of the year, all of the seats in green cars had been booked out well in advance of our entry to Japan. The JR staff were really helpful, and we only had to line up on the platform for less than 20 minutes for seats on the next available Shinkansen. The staff at the JR booths at the train stations were also a great help, some wrote down the connections we would need for local trains and which platforms to go to. There are plenty of English language signs at the stations, on the platforms and aboard the trains. Our only issue was on our last day when the Narita Express was cancelled and many train lines stopped due to snow. There were no English announcements over the loudspeakers or on the signs, but due to the kindness of a Japanese woman who spoke no English leading us on a 1/2 hour train trip to get an alternative train, we made it to our flight on time. Be aware that there can be long lines at Narita's JR booth to pick up your pass though. If you are getting the limousine bus to Tokyo I would pick up my pass elsewhere. If not, be prepared for a wait of about an hour. Overall the convenience of just flashing a pass on your way in and out of the station made this great value for money. I would also recommend getting a Suica card for use on the local non-JR subways and other train lines in Tokyo, I wish we had them here in Sydney. They can be purchased at the railway stations ticket machines (which have English translation buttons) and used instead of buying train or bus tickets, or in convenience stores for purchases.

Picked up a 2 week rail pass for a recent holiday in Japan. It represents great value for money for travelling around the country, provided you're going to make enough trips to justify the initial expense (not hard to do on an average holiday). Using the pass is very easy, just show it at the gate into and out of each station and away you go. Can also use this to make reservations for train rides between major cities, which is handy if you don't like to just show up and hop on into an unreserved carriage. Highly recommended for cheap train rides around Japan, and a must if you're going to be moving around the country more than a little during your stay.

"JR Pass - a great aid to travelling in Japan"

Value for money: 4/5
Ease of use: 4/5

We like to be well-organised before we travel overseas and invariably travel with reserved train bookings within and between countries, utilising Rail Passes/reservations issued in advance in Australia through Rail Plus. On our recent first trip to Japan we were a little concerned that we could only be issued with a Rail Pass voucher in Australia and needed to have this voucher converted to a JR Pass once we arrived in Japan and could then only reserve seats after we received our JR Pass. As it turned out, despite langage difficulties, the voucher conversion at Narita Airport was easy. Although we were not forewarned, we found that the Narita ticket office would only make reservations for travel on that day. After considerable time later searching through a very crowded Shinjuku station we eventually found a ticket office where we were able to reserve seats for our various destinations for every day of our travels. Despite communication difficulties on both sides, we found the JR staff were at all times very obliging, patient, polite and helpful. Armed with our reserved seats, train travel in Japan was a breeze. The trains were punctual, clean, comfortable and attendants were always willing to assist. Despite our initial concerns and some inconvenience, we believe that the JR Pass is a great aid to travelling in Japan as long as you accept that train reservation arrangements in Japan are different to those in Europe, UK and the USA.

It was so easy to get in and out of stations with The JR Rail Pass. The main Event for my stay in Japan was the F1 Grand Prix held in Suzuka. I stayed in Tokyo and went from Tokyo to Nagoya (connection to local trains to take me to Suzuka) via Bullet Train (Shinkansen) back and forth multiple times and this is where I saved the most money by using the Rail Pass. Confusion was minimal on what trains I could use it on and the whole experience was fast and easy. Highly recommend to visitors of Japan. My family, 2 adults and 5 children, spent time in Tokyo, Hakone, Takayama and Kyoto on our recent travels in Japan. The JR pass is fantastic for use in Tokyo. Most of the trains take the pass. It is also a real money saver when travelling on the Shinkansen and getting around Japan. It is important to book a little in advance if you want to sit together on the Shinkansen and you are travelling in a group, as we were, not so much if you are travelling alone. However, it can't be used everywhere. We could not use it in Hakone, it is not necessary in Takayama and it is not very usful in Kyoto, where buses and underground rail are the easiest way to get around. I would definitely buy a JR Pass if returning to Japan for travel. If, however, I was only visiting Kyoto, for example, I wouldn't bother.

The JR pass is great. The biggest hassle is turning the voucher into a JR Pass once you are in Japan. The places are few in number to do it, and over two trips in the last few years, we have been to two different venues to obtain the Pass. Both wer really hard to find. Better maps for finding the offices would be good. Better still...send us the pass while we are in Australia. Everything else about JR is efficient. Why can't this be as well?

The pass covers trains run by JR. If you need to catch a train from a different train compnay, you cannot use this pass for that train. If your JR pass uses tracks which are owned by another company, you will be charged a surplus by the conductor on the JR train (we were not warned of this when showing the JR pass at the ticket office when making a booking even though I had a Japanese speaker with me) and the surplus must be paid in cash. JR conductors do not accept credit cards. For one fast train, I could not make a seat reservation using my JR pass, but the pass was accepted when I was travelling in a unreserved carriage on the same train on a different day. The pass can be used on the Yamanote circle line in Tokyo, which is handy, but you need to find an entry/exit with a person at a desk because the pass cannot be used with the machines for entry/exit.

We purchased our pass for 7 days, and organized for it to be activated when we needed to travel the farthest. With one trip, from Tokyo to Hiroshima, the ticket paid for itself, and the rest of our holiday train trips were free. Although we couldn't use the ticket for the Tokyo underground, we could use it for most other train trips around Tokyo, and of course all over Japan. If you plan your trip to make the most of the ticket, you will find it great value. Don't forget you will still have to reserve seats on the Shinkansen ( bullet trains). And Japanese train ticketing people are fabulous, no questions asked, very helpful.

The Japanese rail system is both complex and easy to use. Master the system even partially and you can skip nearly anywhere. The biggest value was easy passing thru stations making mistakes and trying again. However mistakes can still cost you money as we found the wrong train often meant an upgrade was our punishment (upgrades cost) seems to be standard practice as it happen a couple of times where we were not on our booked train(dont get on one unless its spot on your ticket time I mean to the minute) if you plan to be on the move more than half your time there the pass is value otherwise point A to B and back with the majority of time at rest just by your tickets when needed.

We used the buses in Kyoto and it was well worth purchasing and saved us a lot of money. The train system is regular, super clean, and easy to negotiate. We got a 2 week rail pass for Japan. The majority of the time, we were able to use our JR passes to travel where we wanted to go. For some legs of our travel, we needed to purchase other rail tickets as JR did not have trains for these sections of rail. Office staff where always polite and helpful with working out our travel routes, which were sometimes quite complex to achieve. Trains are certainly the best way to get around Japan and I highly recommend getting a JR pass for the length of time you intend to travel. If used consistently, you will save money having a pass, versus paying for each ticket.

Firstly, Railplus is a very easy company to work with to obtain this fantastic travel pass. Professional, good communication and lots of info on the website. Previously when in Japan I used a company that offered discount rail travel with accommodation packages. This time I felt more confident to arrange all my own travel, and it was perfect to be in one city, go into the well signed JR Ticket counter at the station and book seats for travel the next day. No problems at all, just remembering to show my pass everytime instead of the issued tickets, so you use the manned exit at the station. We also used our Rail Pass on the JR local trains which saved us lots of money around Kyoto and Tokyo. Obviously it doesn't cover the subways which we had to pay extra for, and many of the buses weren't covered either. The Japan Rail Pass is excellent value. I was there for 9 days, but only had a 7 day pass. That would be my only wish that there was like a 10 day pass; in saying that, I would recommend the pass to anyone visiting Japan who planned to travel at least 3 times on the Shinkansen.

Because Japan has such an extensive and modern train system the Rail pass paid for itself with the first trip on the Shinkansen. Not happy though that we had to get a 7 day one -felt like we were wasting days. We never travel to a new place EVERY day, so it felt like we were missing out on something we had already paid for. Worth buying if you are going to catch anything more than a few trains, especially as Japan is so expensive. You have to be very patient when you arrive though, as it took us 45 minutes of queuing at Nagoya airport before we could exchange it for the Japan Rail ticket (not what you feel like after a long flight). There are a few trains you can’t use it on, but most trains are so frequent it didn’t really matter. Also a reminder to show it every time you go through the gates – you can’t just swipe your ticket. We were really impressed with the Japan Rail Pass, especially because we could use it on the local trains within Tokyo, most of the Shinkansens and on the Narita Express! Think that was the most exciting discovery! Though it was a bit difficult to find where the ticketing desk was from inside the gates in Tokyo station, but otherwise, such a simple way to travel. It definitely made our trip that much easier and more enjoyable!

The pass was worth it. Although the Japanese rail pass only covers JR Train Lines (not subway) it was a huge help and saved us a lot of money. If you want to travel around Japan it is worth getting as it can be used for the bullet trains and all you have to focus book a seat. Speaking to other people they spent large amounts of money and time trying to get train tickets that cost them more than our 7 day pass. Easy to use as all you have to do is show the person at the gate (there's always someone) and you get to go right through. This is especially good around peak hour times. Defiantly recommend getting that pass if you want to travel around.

Train travel was very easy and comfortable in Japan and I would totally recommend it as a way of seeing Japan. You DO need to have some common sense and some forward planning - e.g. some train stations are massive and can take some time to navigate. I would also recommend booking your seats in advance - you never know when you are going to get a busy train. As long as you do this, though, you will have a great experience.

Obtaining the actual pass at the Narita airport was a slow and prolonged process. However this must be done to get full value. On arrival at the Tokyo station I received excellent service at the Bookings office and booked all trips out of Tokyo quickly and best seats. The value for travel around the Tokyo circle was very good but having to wait to show the pass to an official at the entry and departing turnstiles was annoying and sometimes difficult. A smartcard would be better than the receipt system.

If you're planning to travel around Japan then buying a Japan Rail Pass is definitely worthwhile. Not really sure about value for money as we weren't really able to find many sites that gave us "regular" train ticket prices, however we weren't too bothered about this as in terms of ease and enjoyment of travel, buying a rail pass is DEFINITELY worthwhile. All you need to do is flash the pass to the rail guards at the platform and off you go, no need to try and decipher the complicated ticket machines or wait in cues. Only downfall is you can't travel on their metro system which sometimes means you need to walk a bit further to a station with a JR line, but other than that it was fantastic.

it was my first time been to japan in april 12. I Read somewhere they said you save $$$ on these tickets buying from Australia, and you can use those tickets on JR rail only. You can't use with other train companies. we paid nearly $400 each for 7 days JR ticket. Went I go to Osaka, there are 4 train companies. SO there weren't much of JR railway in the city. We had to buy train tickets for other train companies. We travelled from Osaka to Tokyo by bullet train. Turned out to be around 8000YEN ($90+) per train , return trip would cost $180. In Tokyo there are 5 train companies, and again not many JR rail , we ended up buying daily ticket to use other train network. 1000 yen ($11 day) per day. So I recommend not to get these JR tickets from Australia unless if you want to travel between cities everyday. The train system is the best over there. bullet train is very comfortable / quiet. :) can't wait to get back there again.

Having the JR Pass made travelling much simpler, not having to negotiate the coin machines and figure out costs to buy tickets, walking straight through the wide guards barriers with our luggage, and pre-paid so that we knew how much we were spending. Perfect for our cross country hopping between cities! No valid for most of the city underground or some local trains, but for the spacious carriages on the bullet trains and efficient and smooth travel, it's definitely worth it.

The Japan rail passes are an excellent way to explore Japan. They are simple and easy to use. We had a brilliant time exploring Japan using them. They enable you to book seats on the Shinkansen (bullet train) to move quickly from city to city and also allow you to access local rail/ferry services that ate also run by Japan Rail. You can't use the tickets on the Tokyo metro but you can use them on the Tokyo loop (Yamanote line) that goes to most major areas/stations in Tokyo. We'd strongly recommend rail passes (we've used them in Europe and Japan).

This rail pass is well worth the money. Subway/train/bullet train/tram etc can be expensive as we found on our last day as our JR pass ran out the night before. With the Jr pass we were able to visit the majority of places we wanted to go. Just couple of short trips on local lines here and there but being short trips they only cost a couple of dollars. The Jr pass makes traveling easy as when you walk though the ticket check section it also provides and excellent op to ask for directions etc.

I bought the 7 day Japan Pass for a recent stay in Tokyo with a plan to see Nikko just north of Tokyo and a weekend in Kyoto. In hindsight, I wish I had planned on further travel as the bullet train system is so efficient. Trains are clean and modern, extremely efficient and easy to use. Signs at Railways and subway stations are in Japanese and English as are the announcements. Reserving a seat never presented a problem. The JR Pass cannot be used on the Nazomi and this is no big deal as the other bullet trains are fantastic. I travelled with my husband who decided not to buy a pass and he would have easily spent at least twice as much as I did on train fares compared with the cost of the JR pass. It is not just the cost of the pass that is such a winner, the convenience is a big factor as well. In Tokyo, I could travel on JR lines and I bought a Suica card for the subways, 2000yen (about $22 unlimited travel/time) which could also be used to buy food/drinks from vending machines. I would definitely recommend getting a JR Pass if you plan on "training it" in Japan. PS The cherry blossoms were amazing this year, Japan really is a lovely place with lovely people. My tip: Get out into the country and see some of the forested and alpine areas as well as Tokyo.

This rail pass does make your life easier. You just show it to the person at the gate and in no time you're on the train toward your destination. Two points that I would like to make: 1. Please calculate your exact travel as it may be cheaper (although not as convenient) to buy individual fares. 2. To issue the pass at the JR station please note which stations have the ability to do so and their opening times. Otherwise all is sweet. Japan has a wonderful train network. I want the same in Australia :-(

During our 3 weeks in Japan, we took: - Narita Express to Shibuya - 10 high-speed Shinkansen trips (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima) - countless metropolitan JR trains in Tokyo & Osaka - JR ferry to Miyajima - monorail to Haneda airport All that was covered by the rail pass. It was painless and a great way to get around. Would've been quite difficult without the rail pass. It's quite expensive, but when you add up the cost of all the train travel you do, it's worth it in the end. We got our money's worth. The train system in Japan is really awesome. Very impressive!

I felt the purchase of a Japanese Rail Pass a great way to go as I had heard that the single costs of buying train tickets was very expensive. I activated my coupon for a pass at Narita Airport which was not too complicated and was therefore able to use the Narita Express into Tokyo. As the train system is quite complicated and this pass cannot be used on the subway, it was a bit confusing as to when I could use it and so needed to study train and subway maps and compare with the information provided by the Japanese Rail Pass. Each time I used the pass I had to go through the manual check which meant sometimes having to queue.( I think having a swipe card would have been a better option). In general I felt I used up my money's worth on the 7 day pass by travelling to Kyoto and return, using the Narita Express one day, taking the train to Kamikura and using the Yamanote line on one day. As I was only in Japan for 10 days, the 7 day pass was my best option. I would recommend purchase of this pass for people travelling to Japan that intend to use the pass on most days of their trip.

Very good way to move around between cities in Japan. Second time using the pass as a Japan frequent visitor. Great value if you are travelling a lot. If you are on tight schedules and need to book more than just the slowest routes, this pass is not the best. Despite what has been stated, you cannot just pay the difference to get on the faster trains running the same lines (e.g. Nozomi), you need to pay the full amount for a new ticket. A bit painful, but if you can schedule your time around the trains you know you can take with the pass then it works ok. If they expanded and added another pass at a higher price to properly cover all the JR trains and express routes then this would be flawless.

Moderator: "The 'Nozomi' bullet train is the fastest train service running in Japan, and is not included on the Japan Rail Pass, however there are many other JR bullet trains that do these routes that are high speed."

We were in Japan for 3 weeks, mostly in Tokyo with a weekend in Kyoto. We arranged seven day rail passes for 3 adults and one child in the week before we left and the exchange pass was delivered within a day of my online order. A week before we were due to leave Tokyo, we went to the nearest JR office (within our local train station - Shinagawa) and exchanged the pass for a Rail Pass and while we were there, booked our seats on the Shinkansen to Kyoto and also our trip back to Narita airport (all using the rail pass). We then enjoyed a week of very simple train trips on the Tokyo subway (with the JR Pass you just go through the information counter, no trying to work out train tickets etc)and seamless trips on the very comfortable and incredibly clean and efficient shinkansen and narita express trains. Definitely recommend the JR pass, it's so simple!

The one week pass is great as long as you plan your itinerary to cover large distances. This means that you need to plan to finish off at a place you want to spend time at, or start there before initializing your Japan Rail Pass. If you discover Nirvana half way through, then it's not economical to stay there! Consider the following as my favorite way to use a 1 week pass. Base yourself in Kyoto - it's within easy reach of 2 international airports, being Osaka and Nagoya.Check in to one of the great budget priced accommodations and use it as a base - no need to carry luggage anywhere, which is a great bonus! Now use you Japan Rail Pass to get pretty much anywhere - Tokyo is only a couple of hours - go there a couple of times if you need. Heading south and all the major spots are also only a couple of hours!

This is the second time I've used the JR pass, and if you do some maths on your trip before you go, you can see if it's suitable for you or not. If you go to more than 1 far destination in a week, or 2 in 2 or 3 in 3, it seems to work out. I got about 60,000yen worth of travel in a week on a 28,000 yen ticket.

U have to get this if ur travelling in Japan. Each city has a loop JR line. If you have to use the other met lines its not to expensive ~280 yen and there are machines to adjust fares at each station in english. Just get a map of the train system for the city at information when u find one. However if ur visiting more then 1 city u have to get it before u leave the country, u can not buy in Japan.

We visited six cities in nine days along the JR West-Sanyo line on our recent holiday to Japan. Commencing our trip from Osaka and travelling as far as Hiroshima with several stops in between, our seven day rail passes afforded us flexible and super efficient travel on Japan's bullet trains. Whether travelling by reserve or non reserved seat the JR pass made travel simple and very pleasurable. By purchasing our rail passes we probably saved several hundred dollars in train fares but the most valuable aspect of travel on the Japan Rail network is the amount of time saved getting to the next destination, which can be better spent sightseeing and discovering new places!

This product only suits people wishing to travel to 3 or more states/areas that are significantly spread apart and require the Shinkansen otherwise you may as well just buy a single journey ticket each time you travel. You also are required to show this pass to the station officers each time you board the station which is a hassle if there is a long queue. I recommend opting for the Suica instead. CAUTION: This cannot be used on subway lines! Only JR lines!

The Japan Rail Pass is great for travelling between several different places. However, if you don't intend on travelling Japan much, the rail pass is not for you. There are several different transportation companies in Japan, and the rail pass can only be used on certain lines (not all). This can be inconvenient in certain places for travelling around, as you can't use all the transport (and some places are not easily accessible otherwise).

However I do disagree with the fact that the Japan Rail Pass cannot be re-issued in case if lost or stolen because its a lot of money, people place an extreme amount of importance on these passes in their travels and unfortunately things can go wrong. Without a re-issue (even if its a small fee like in Eurpoe) its extremely unsafe as it leaves the travel either broke from spending money on tickets again or stranded at a location. One other suggestion is that the Exchange Office (where the Rail Passes are activated) should have opening hours the same times as the Information Centres in the train station as well as being consistent within each 'suburb' to ease stress and confusion. Overall though, the whole concept of the Japan Rail Pass made our trip extremely easy and time efficient!

My daughter and I bought the 14 day JR pass and visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kobe , Takayama and then back to Tokyo. We LOVED travelling by train in Japan as the trains are so fast, clean, comfortable and dependable.Only wish the airlines seats were as spacious! We could reserve seats on most trains very easily but if short on time, we jumped on the first few unreserved carriages without a problem. The trains were always on time and the staff were extremely helpful if we needed advice on finding the right platform or similar information. Our favourite trip was the journey from Nagoya to Takayama, snaking through the beautiful river valley and the little villages.

The JR network is excellent, giving you access to many places from cities to tiny rural towns. I have bought this pass a few times and not needed to use any other rail or bus services. This pass will easily pay for itself if you are travelling on express trains (anything with a seat reservation). But if you can travel on regular services this pass wouldn't be worthwhile.

My wife and I have just returned from a two week trip to Japan and used the Japan Rail Pass extensively. The rail system is incredibly efficient and punctual. The trains are spotlessy clean and we had no trouble reserving seats on the Shinkansens and Limited Express trains we travelled on. We mostly travelled outside peak hours and often had only a few other passengers in our carriage. It can be a bit confusing tranferring to the local transport systems in the big city stations but we found the tourist information offices located at the main stations to be very helpful in guiding us to our hotel etc. Just be patient and polite and you will rewarded. Remember to check the dates are correct on your rail pass when it is issued. Initially we were issued with seven day passes instead of the fourteen day passes indicated on the exchange vouchers. The assistant was apologetic and a bit embarrassed when I pointed out the error and immediately issued two fourteen day passes. All the rail staff we encountered were polite and as helpful as possible, despite the language difficulties, which weren't as bad as we expected. Another tip is to travel light. Our medium sized suitcases were ok and fitted in the overhead racks on the trains but we will take less clothing on our next trip. Japan is well worth a visit and the Japan Rail pass is a great way to get around. Buy one. Domo Arigato (thank you) and Sayonara.

This is the third type of Japan Rail pass I've used and is best for seeing a broad area of the country not on Shinks though. Previously used a Kansai West pass for lots of travel between Nara, Kyoto & Himeji. Then the Sanyo West pass took us further afield to Fukuoka, and much faster as it includes all Shinkansens. This time we went north to Tokyo and could have gone all over riding any but the fastest Shink- the Nozomi. I do wish this pass was available for non consecutive days. With this sort of travel it is good to be able to have a couple of days in a place, but a day of not using the pass means you can easily not get good value from it. JR take note- it would be good to have a pass which offers non consecutive 'day vouchers' for all overseas visitors.

I loved the Japan Rail Pass as it allowed me to explore so much of this incredible country in such a short period of time (10 days). The Japan Rail Pass was also my saviour on the day of my departure from Osaka Airport to return to Australia. We lost track of time within the fascinating A-Bomb museum in Hiroshima, and by the time we returned to Hiroshima Station, our only travel option to Osaka Airport was via 2 connecting trains that would arrive at Osaka Airport 5 mins before our check-in counter closed! Because of the efficiency of the JR network, and the trains enabled by our JR Passes, we made our flight back home just in the nick of time! Cheers JR & Rail Plus!

If only JR could come up with tickets that DO work in the automatic gates, so that the process of going through the human operated gate could be eliminated. Sometimes one gets held up at that point, as the person is involved in "fare adjustments" or timeconsuming processes for other travellers.

Essentially JR Pass delivered as expected. It is good value. One point to watch is the confusion that can exist surrounding JR published services and some lines that may have passed to private ownership. We got caught out on a journey from Tottori to Kyoto and were required to pay the on board guard ... who, by the way, was wearing a uniform with JR badging. Even the staff at Kyoto station had difficulty among themselves establishing exactly who owned what. Our route guide and pass showed this 'Limited Express' to match ticket conditions. We lost the argument.

A RailPass is the best way to see Japan. Hassle-free bookings and unlimited travel on Shinkansen & JR lines was a real plus! Trains run often and always on time. The Shinkansen can quickly get you to all the major sightseeing destinations. I highly recommend the Green Pass if you can afford it. That way you are guaranteed a seat, especially if travelling during Japanese holidays. It costs a bit more but if you use it often it more than pays for itself. It also takes the hassle out of budgeting for travel costs before you even get there!

In addition while in Hiroshima we went to Miyajima by rail and ferry and found the pass covered this trip as well. It worked well for us because of the amount of travel that we did, but I would suggest a fare comparison with the cost of the rail pass if only making a few rail journeys.

I was quite happy with the JR pass. It is very easy to use and has a small benefit in that it lets people know you are a foreignor so they are more likely to offer you assistance and directions. The Japanese were very friendly and helpful to me despite the language barrier. If you are not travelling across the whole country, it may be worth considering other variants of the pass, for example if you are staying down the bottom of the country, consider the cheaper JRWest pass, while it will not get you up to areas like Tokyo, it will likely get you to anywhere you want to go around Kansai/Osaka. When catching the trains, I had no problems getting a seat, even though I never booked one, there were always seats available in non-reserved carriages. If travelling a long way on the Bullet style trains, check which train you are getting on, they pass through very regularly, and sometimes it is better to wait ten minutes to get a faster train that stops less often, just be careful to not board the Nizomi as this is the only bullet train not covered by the pass.

In the seven days in Japan we visited, Hiroshima, Myajima, Kyoto, Nagoya, Tokyo and a day trip to Nikko - a must visit site. Hakkone Circuit could be a visit reserved for either before or after activating rail pass. If interested in Japanese history scratch below the surface in Kyoto. We used rail pass to travel to Niseko for skiing. Did not realize that it was a public Holiday and left booking too late - had reserved standing place for 2.5 hours of the 9 hour journey. Most challenging part of Japan is negotiating the underground stations. Never ask a Japanese person' "Is this the correct way?" - It is impolite to disagree with you - Ask instead, "Which is the way?"

JR service is excellent , timely and super efficient. On some of the busy routes remember to make reservations in advance. At Sapporo Central Station on a busy morning we were met by a JR customer service young lady who would put many airline flight atttendants to shame and had our desired itinerary with 3 train changes to Tokyo sorted and reserved tickets issued in less than 5 minutes. My only wish is that there were some other options on the JR pass - perhaps for say 5 days travel in a month similar to Eurail options.

"We travelled comfortably over long distances losing minimal time to travel."

We only had 2 weeks in Japan & travelled vast distances in a short period. All trains were spotlessly clean & punctual, most had power points to allow for computers & recharging batteries, seats were comfortable & reclined, leg space was ample. The on-board trolley service was handy for snacks & meals. We opted to sleep in our seats for the overnight trip to the Sapporo Snow Festival in the far north. Unfortunately the trains used for both trips to & from the Festival came straight out of The Ark. Sleeping on the floor in the carpeted sleeping rooms, or in a sleeping car would have been a better alternative. (Their was an extra charge for these alternatives) The Pass was easy to use and good value. Seeing the sights from the comfort of a fast moving, heated, modern carriage was great. Recharging camera batteries during the journey was very handy. Travelling in the depths of winter we soon realised that it is much nicer to sit in comfort and look out at the falling snow & snow covered houses, fields & peaks than it is to actually walk through the snow. I loved Japan & hope to return to see this beautiful country in a season other than Winter. And I will be buying a rail pass for my next trip as it gives you flexibility to travel long distances very quickly, in comfort, at a time that suits the individual.

Although slightly annoying to organise, especially at the Japanese end, it really isn't that hard and once you have it you can use it around Tokyo on the Yamonote line and also if it is within the time limit you can get to the airport with it. Plus hopping on a bullet train to Kyoto or Osaka or Nara or anywhere is a great thing to do and walking through the ticket points and flashing your Japan rail pass gives you a great sense of freedom.

Railpass is a great idea if you are travelling far and wide across Japan. We only took two train trips in Japan in the week we were travelling so individual train tickets would probably have been a more economical option. If I was to travel for any longer, the pass would be much better value.

The easiest way to travel in Japan is by train - long distances by Shinkansen, locally on JR tracks and even in suburban Tokyo on JR tracks. The JR stations are the most conveniently located - and with a JR pass our whole family were able to go through the gates quickly. Having that Japan Rail Pass took ALL the hassle and worry out of the travel around the country - organising reserved seat tickets was free and relatively easy - and organising a travel itinerary is very easy with the help of the Japan Rail web site "hyperdia". The upfront cost is very quickly offset if you are travelling - all in all a great deal. Our holiday would not have been as wonderful without it. And the RailPlus staff here in Australia were fantastic!!! Thank you.

The train service in Japan is fast and convenient. Trains are scheduled frequently and it is most unusual if they don't run to time. Having not been to Japan before we were keen to see the country rather than flying from city to city. Our primary reason for the trip was for skiing in the north island of Hokkaido, but we wanted to visit other cities. We purchased to lots of 7 day JR passes as while skiing we wouldn't be using them. We activated the passes at Osaka JR Station and reserved seats on the various stages. The assistant had a little English and was very helpful in working out a timetable to suit us. Our travel was from Osaka to Hiroshima then back to Nagoya, then up to Hachinohe. Then by conventional trains( still quite fast 100 - 120kph) with a couple of changes to Sappora. After Skiing we returned by a similar route to Tokyo, 2 nights and out to Narita Airport (express). All the trains are very clean and the service is always right on time to the minute. Very simple to use the JR passes and all the JR staff are very helpful. The Shinkansen trains are amazing so smooth and fast 280 - 300 kph. All in all we found it a very easy and great way to travel through Japan, we covered a lot of their country.

The Japan Rail Pass makes travelling around Japan via train so easy. I have travelled through Europe on the Eurail Pass so was expecting the same problems, but Japan Rail is so different. The pass made my trip stress free - it was just so easy. It's easy to navigate, organised and on time. The Japan Rail Pass encourages you to get out of the city and explore Japan's country side - which is breath taking. If you are only planning on a single trip e.g. tokyo to kyoto it probably isn't economical, but if you want to do a few day trips here and there I definately recommend it.

If you can work out your days and pay for the shorter trips first (Osaka to Kyoto - approx $13 AUD one way) then activate the pass for the longer trips - your laughing! JR Pass gave us the convenience to travel almost anywhere in Japan. We bought the green car pass and it was proven to be the best choice we made as we travelled with two young children (4years old and 1.5 years old) and an elderly person (79 years old). Note: Green car normally has less people in it so our children can sit on their own but be aware that some routes don't have green cars fasilities, eg. Kyoto-Hiroshima route. In this case, we were given seats in the ordinary silence car and our children had to sit on our laps for the whole journey. We also bought the suica cards in Tokyo in anticipation to travel around Tokyo and to Hakone (JR pass only cover the travel between Tokyo and Odawara), however, we didn't need to use them at all. We returned the cards to the JR office in Narita airport for a refund. They refunded the amount which wasn't used (2000 yen) minus 210 yen for the admin fees for each card. When you travel especially with young kids and/or eldery people, try to avoid peak hours (7.30-9 am) and (5-7pm). if you have to travel during those peak hours, then feel free to ask those ignorant young people to give their seats to your kids/older relatives.

Being able to hop on and off the shinkansen as much as you like is just awesome. When I was living in Japan I never caught it because a single trip was so expensive! The JR Pass makes it easy. This time round I got an English timetable which helped! It would be good if there was a timetable that only listed Hikari/Kodama services on the main line. A few minutes with a highlighter might do it. It also saved a lot of money just commuting round Tokyo. We stayed in Kanda because it was cheaper, and once we discovered the Chuo Kaisoku line we could be in Shinjuku in 15 minutes. Easy.

The 2 week pass represents good value if doing a reasonable amount of travel although there was a range of discount deals going on in Japan - but no English explanations available we could see. It can be confusing which trains you need to reserve seats or which ones you can just show your pass - some more research or clearer directions would be useful! Overall, the pass was very easy to use and I would highly recommend it for those wishing to visit a number of different places during their stay or retain flexibility to travel when & where they desire. We also received excellent service obtaining the initial voucher and associated rail pass information kit from Rail Plus.

This is the second time we've been to Japan and also the second time we purchased a JR Pass. We think the era is well and truly over for a 'paper card' pass that you must guard with all your life and always anxious of losing.. It's time JR Pass moves on to the 21st century, to use an electronic based ticket with online authentication / activation facility, reprinting service (even for a fee) if ticket is lost.. Also our experience with 'Hokutosei', the sleeper train to Sapporo is something very strange and peculiar. Diesel locomotive combined with all metal squat toilet which stinks makes you feel you're on your way to Pyongyang, not Sapporo. The sleeper cabin is also very basic and a little cramped.. with limited stowage space for luggage and bags. The toilet was actually so bad that we had to skip brushing our teeth that night. Admittedly, we board the train at Sendai at 23.30.. we probably should've board the train earlier from Ueno to familiarise ourselves with Hokutosei.. and what it offers. I was told there's a dining car and even shower room.. but to be honest we were discouraged to venture out that late.. thinking it would all be shut anyway. We also question the value of Hokutosei.. at around AUD200 per head, it's cheaper to travel with Shinkansen during the day, and get a nice hotel for the night at your destination. A nice three stars hotel can be had for less than AUD200. All in all, Japan Rail pass still represent a good value for multiple cities travel in Japan, definitely recommended for all travellers. Ah.. how we miss the serene ride of Shinkansen while eating our Ekiben and drinking a tall can of beer..

We had the JR Pass for the first two weeks of our three week holiday in Japan. The pass is so simple to use, and because we travelled to a few cities by Shinkansen, it cost us less than buying individual tickets. If you'll be travelling around a lot between cities, the JR Pass is a good choice.

The best thing about the JR pass is it's ease of use and value. I saved plenty of money by purchasing the pass before arriving in Japan. It is also very easy to use, don't have to worry about getting tickets for any of the trains. It is great for the shinkansen travel between cities and can be used to see everything around Tokyo and Osaka. A tip for anyone using the pass is to check out www.hyperdia.com for easy to find train information and times.

It was really great, I could change my plans at the last minute. I calculated that I saved a chunk of money with the rail pass but I really only needed a two week pass instead of a three week pass (three week trip). Recommend it because you can travel flexibly - decide where you want to go the day before, or even the hour before. You dont have to buy tickets, just show your pass and walk through the barrier. There are cheaper ways to travel, but if you want to maximise the amount of places you can go to in Japan, the rail pass makes a massive difference.

The Japan Rail Pass is great value for money. Every large railway station has a ticket office where seat reservations can be made - even 30 mins before you travel. Easy to use, just go through the manned ticket barrier and show the pass. Travel on shinkansen and local trains is included in the pass. The trains are clean, comfortable and fast. I was based in one city and took day trips which was possible because of the fast and regular service.

Clearly useful to save money, but would recommend doing a bit more research than we did and planning ahead for trips, particularly day trips. For example, we decided to sort out tickets for day trips to Hakone (from Tokyo) and Hiroshima (from Kyoto)on the day. Hakone (to Odawara) we had to wait for the 3rd train whilst for Hiroshima, we had to get a smoking carriage (fortunately, we lined up early and got a seat on the unreserved carriage without smoking) as it was a busy day, and then had to return on a 3pm train otherwise we would have needed to wait until after 9pm. These may be isolated incidents, but given you can book ahead, and then change if you get there early and there are spare seats, I'd recommend some extra planning. Certainly value for money and easy to use - great for travel between Tokyo and Kyoto, and we also used from Kyoto to Kansai Airport.

It gave us carefree journey around Japan. The rails timetable provided us to plan before the holiday. We had to use a rental car for 12 hours to see the National park area. Compared to the cost of car rental rail was much easier and cheaper to use.But if you cannot read any Japanese and no knowledge on geography it would be impossible to use the pass to its maximum value. We had great time in Hokkaido.

We used the pass to travel from Nagoya to Takayama then back to Nagoya, then on to Kyoto, then Hiroshima and finally Tokyo. The train tickets are expensive if you get them there so this was definitely the best option. In Tokyo we did not use the pass much as we used the metro alot of the time to get around and the pass does not cover the metro. If spending most time in Tokyo i would not recommended a rail pass. Metro is pretty cheap but not that easy to figure out in terms of which ticket you need but the Japanese are overly helpful so it is easy.

The rail passes are fantastic, unlimited travel on JR trains made life in Japan very easy. Often people will caution you that unless you plan on extensive travel within Japan, they are not good value for money. This is possibly true if you only see one or two cities, but we visited 6 cities on a 14 day pass and some of our trips would have been very expensive if we'd had to buy the tickets individually. Train travel in Japan is so efficient and easy to use that you can easily take a day trip to a city hundreds of miles away and return in the evening without issue. With the rail pass, you can easily board any train, including the unreserved bullet train carriages, without any prior booking. This means that travelling on impulse or changing plans is very easy. If you wish to have a reserved seat, which we would recommend for long journeys, you simply go to the booking counter and they will give you a pass. We found the Hyperdia website useful, using it to write down train numbers, times and dates which the non-english speaking staff could easily understand. You can also book your seats way in advance at any JR booking counter, allowing you to plan your entire trip if you are organised enough. We had a green pass which allows travel in the equivalent of 'business class' but the regular seats are still pretty good and the additional expense was probably not worth it. One of the advantages of the green cars is that they are less popular so you are more likely to get a booking for a popular route. The pass does not include the Nozomi trains, but they are identical to the regular bullet trains, but stop less. On a big trip from the north to the south, the Nozomi does save some time, but not enough to warrant their additional cost. The pass covers JR buses as well as JR Ferries, helpful if you want to visit island attractions such as Miyajima.

Given that JR Pass is only available to non-residents I would of thought that the staff at JR desks would have a little better understanding of Enlish (or other)language/s. Also signage was adequate in some places but not at all places. I found that writing my destination and time of departure on paper and handing it over was usually sufficient to get the correct ticket. It was sometimes difficult to figure out what platform (track) the trains would depart. I think the JR Pass was excellent value and can only admire the efficiency of the rail system in Japan

There was nothing to dislike about the whole train experience from being dropped off at the station, resevering tickets, getting onto the station and boarding the train - easy as. We went in the green cars for a bit of extra space as we had luggage. Suggestion - do reserve a ticket instead of just boarding the train - it is really simple PS Loved the smoking cars although we travelled in the non smoking cars.

Japan Trains r great. This pass excellent value. Only needed 7 days to travel around Japan. Used metro in Greater Tokyo. Don't need the 'Green' pass as the trains are so frequent and clean in ordinary class.

"Japan - 7 Day Rail Pass"

Value for money: 5/5
Ease of use: 3/5
Suitability: 5/5

Japan rail systems seem a little crazy but if you learn to observe and read the very limited English, you will be able to make your way to your destination with much ease. Only in the past 100 years as English been added to the majority of their signage and having a Japan 7 Day Rail pass allows you to travel long distances in a very short time on the Shinkansen trains - more commonly known as the bullet trains travelling at approximately 300km/hr. Every bullet train has small vending machines on board, on route trolley service and assigned seating. Very fast trains and so neat and tidy. Highly recommend to any one travelling around Japan.

"Tokyo seaside trip - return day fare"

Value for money: 5/5
Ease of use: 5/5

After 3 days in crazy Tokyo, we decided to take a seaside trip to a small suburb/town about one hour away that was recommended for the temples and scenery. Our first big trip on the Japan Train network and we were a bit worried how we would go. However to our delight is was clean, easy, fastÂ?.as easy as catching a train in Australia and in many ways still an amazing cultural experience for travellers!!! We were a group of six travellers with one giant of a man from Denmark, 6'6" blonde Scandinavian who had to duck to get through the train doors, and to all our amusement sat on one long seat surrounded but some tiny Japanese girls who didn't reach his shoulders. I must also say they have the best train etiquette of anywhere I have been, no mobile phones are allowed to be used, and there was no rubbish or graffiti. On the cultural side there was a fascinating comparison of the old and new. Old ladies in Kimono and young funky Harajuku girl in crazy get ups all travelling together and us. A local train has never been so interesting and so much fun.

"JR Railways - Japan Rail"

Value for money: 5/5
Ease of use: 5/5
Suitability: 5/5

Note to self: Never travel at peak hour if you have luggage or backpacks. My partner and I got caught in peak hour madness from Yokohama to Tokyo and boy if you think our trains get crowded here in Sydney, then you haven't had a real peak hour train experience yet. In Japan they employ station guards whose job is to litterally push the people into carriage to make all the commuters fit inside. My boyfriend and I were seperated in the process and having two huge backpacks did not help. I could feel three strangers breathing down my neck and I could not escape it as there was no room to move around. The funny thing is, everyone on the train didn't complain. They just all stood there squashed up against one another. I guess that was just a normal train ride for them. One man even fell asleep with his face squashed up against the window and I could hear him snoring very lightly!
