We travelled from Budapest to Prague, then Berlin and later to Dusseldorf. Just make sure you book your seats. First Class did not cost much more and was worth it.

I had bought a ticket direct from Frankfurt am Main to Zurich but we had to change at Basel. The on board English announcements were unclear and we had literally only 3 minutes to change platforms and catch an alternative TGV train to Zurich. There would have been subsequent trains but I suspect we would have had to pay again. So be sure that if you have any doubts about transfers etc ask the helpful conductors. Also just another word of warning. The platform signage may not have your particular destination displayed so you must know your train number. Also if you have a reserved seat be sure you choose the correct coach number which is painted on the side of the train near the entrance.

there were big delays in the system the day we were travelling. The station at Frankfurt airport was very confusing. We really had no clue which train was coming and even when the indicators were signalling for a partiocular train a different one would pull in,. IN the end we got on the wrong train but it was going to our destination. Also the toilets were FILTHY

The ICE trains are among the best in Europe. The German stations I visited on my travels were very clean, generally well laid out, and train travel is so much less fuss than flying. By the time you factor in check in time for flights, security processing, and getting to/from an airport, utilising the high speed train service within Europe compares favourably (and you get a comfortable seat with a view of the countryside, towns and villages as you zoom through). Trains take you right into the centre of town and I have been pleasantly surprised by the hotels within walking distance to the station I have used this trip. If you are travelling on a first class ticket (not a rail pass) the larger German Hauptbahnhof have lounges where you can wait in relative comfort with free drinks and snacks. Finally make sure you check out the map of the carriages for your train so you know where to stand on the platform to get to your reserved seat quickly. The carriage map is on the platform.

You need to find your seats quickly if you are traveling with luggage as there aren't that many areas for luggage storage for large suitcases. The seats were quite hard, not as comfortable as the seats from Gothenburg to Copenhagen. It was an experience when the train boarded the ferry.

We used the ice trains several times through Europe during our holiday and we did not gave 1 bad journey. The train was always on or close to time and it was great to see the speed you were getting up to. The only downside was luggage storage. Make sure you get on 1st cos there isn't a lot of space to store large suitcases. On one of the trains I had to lift my 15kg suitcase over my head to store it in the carry bag storage as there was no where else.

The trains are very clean and the seats are comfortable with plenty of leg room. The only negative is the inadequacy of storage space for suitcases which does not require lifting them above your head onto a rack.

The ice train was cancelled for service and we were put onto a regional substitute that was inadequate and inferior! We were not informed of this even after checking in at the train station an hour ahead of travel, when we told them we were booked into seats and first class we were told no problem we have seats in the first car for you. There was no bistro car, the bathroom was disgusting and smelly. I have travelled on many modes of transport that were just standard tickets in different places, but when YOU PAY FOR FIRST CLASS travel, You kind of expect better!!! Not only was the train inferior, but we made an unscheduled detour and stop in a town called Buchen to drop off some train workers and this put the train more than 40minutes behind schedule...The only saving grace was the ferry from Rodby to Puttgarden, an experience worth having and 45 minutes off that train! Seriously want my money back!!!

A problem was experienced in 1st Class on the Ice Train 126 from Koeln to Amsterdam Central Station. The problem was caused by people with no reservation occupying the reserved seats. This created a big movement of people and luggage in the coach . After this experience, I think 1st Class should require a reservation.

We found the ICE train very comfortable and had a bonus ferry trip which we did not expect. All arrangements went very smoothly and the staff were excellent. Our only complaint would be lack of room for luggage. Our only option was to haul our two heavy suitcases onto overhead racks. We also did not enjoy facing backwards for the duration of our rail journey. We did not appreciate late platform change and our lack of local language made it difficult - an English announcement would have been extremely useful.

We arrived at Munich Haupbahnhof two hours before our train was due to depart for Stuttgart only to be told that, "There is no train to Stuttgart today"! I booked these tickets for four adults in Australia late February 2014 for travel late May 2014. After inspecting our tickets and some minutes searching the computer, staff at the Haupbahnhof told us that our train had been cancelled some time previous and the only way we would catch our connecting train to Paris from Stuttgart would be to catch an earlier train to Esslingen, then another train from Esslingen to Stuttgart. If our original train had run, we would have missed our connecting train to Paris as our connecting train's departure time had been moved forward fifteen minutes. All other trains from Stuttgart to Paris that day were fully booked. We arrived at Stuttgart with twenty minutes before our next train departed. From previous experience with rail travel in Europe and up to three and a half hour delays I will never book any rail travel with a connecting train with less than four hours between trains. Staff at Munich Haupbahnhof were excellent, I appreciate their assistance. Thank you Deutsche Bahn Staff.

In Switzerland, particularly, the trains just GLIDE along.....sadly, you pay exhorbitant prices for all Rail products here. It's like there's an extra 50% tariff, to cover the beautiful scenery. A one hour trip Zurich to Bern return, $116 AUD. In Australia, I can do a one hour train trip for $9 !!

This train was easy to book online and the service was exceptional. We had use of the lounges at the station and the comfort that entails. It was a little difficult knowing what to do with our large suitcases but no one seemed to mind where we put them. We travelled without the use of the internet but we were informed it was coming in December - we will just have to come back!

We booked first class to travel between Berlin and Amsterdam. The train was very old and a bit grubby. However, there was a problem on the line and we had to disembark in Germany from where we were bussed to a station in the Netherlands and told there would be a train waiting to take us to Amsterdam. Not quite correct. We arrived at the station, there was no one to tell us what was going on and we finally were given details about trains we could get to get to Amsterdam. Three train changes (instead of direct service) and 2 and a half hours later (instead of 1 hour) we got to Amsterdam. Not impressed at just being deserted.

As well as my having to stand most of the way, my wife also had to stand for about a quarter of the time. The journey completion time to Berlin was indicated as 4 hrs 21 min. Allowing one hour for missed connection we should have arrived Berlin 17h09. Actual arrival time was 18H30 approximately. Apparently an error on our ticket reservation. Allowing for all that the journey would have been fine in all respects. Next time I won't risk a half hour connection gap.

We purchased our tckets for train travel from Utrecht Netherland to Budapest online but when we received them by post (for three consecutive legs of travel), the 3rd ticket didn't have a date or reservation and when I phoned Rail Plus I was told that we could catch any train within the month even though I had filled in a date on purchase of ticket. On train change at Munich. we wanted to make sure we had seats on the last leg to Budapest and were told by the English speaking assistant at the ticket counter that this ticket didn't allow for the overnight train. That meant we would have had to wait there overnight when we needed to get to Budapest for our cruise the following day. Thanfully the ticket assistant helped us to get on the train by paying just $6 for seat reservation, but did say we could have purchased the same seats for $98 for two whilst we had paid $224 online (not being sleeper cabin). So it was confusing for us and I would recommend taking extra care and making sure you get the correct tickets. In future I would probably not buy online to avoid this predicament.

Poor ease of use relates to the difficulties of loading and getting around baggage in aisles. It would help if there were more luggage space. It would also be better if at each door it indicated which seat numbers are best accessed from that end of the carriage. Thalys does it better. I object to being allocated to seats facing rearwards on long distance rail. One of the joys of rail travel is being able to see the approaching scenery. Reversible seats would add to the attraction. WC cleanliness was an issue.

We have just returned from travelling through Europe for 4 weeks using trains. We booked point to point tickets through Rail plus. All train trips went on time and was very easy to use. We went second class as the longest we were on a train was 3 hours. We found 2nd class fine.

On leaving Copenhagen train was altered to another platform at last moment. No announcements in English so we had to rush up an escalator, down another escalator and along platform to 1st class carriage with luggage in tow. On entering 1st class carriage for which we had paid reservations there were passengers who should not have been in 1st class and they just sat anywhere. Conductor was great and sorted it out fairly soon after the train left but it was not a good situation.

Very easy way to travel on the trains, just remember to fill in the details and not detach anything until you are finished. Although, oddly enough the German trains were all late or delayed :(. Try to take care of the pass, as the cover tears easily. A protective case would be handy. Oh and the extra money for first class is worth it. Always spare seats available without booking, and room for luggage to travel with you.

Travelled in mainland Europe as a couple during May 2012. Pre purchased Eurail passes for 5 country travel. As our itinery was very tight and busy we took the precaution of pre booking many sector seat reservations (1st class) with Railplus Australia. At the time the reservation fees seemed very expensive. In almost every case unfotunately the reservations were NOT necesary as the 1st class carriages were rarely full. On ICE trains, reservations are not ever compulsory (except night services). However on Thalys, TGV , Eurostar and some other special trains etc the reservations are compulsory regardless of how full the cars are. We found that when time permits the in-country reservaton fees were much cheaper than booking from Australia. OF course if it is PEAK time in mid summer travel you will always take the chance that there is No seat available at all.. although you can always also travel 2nd class on a first class ticket which would not be the end of the world. In summary if we had our time over again knowing now what we didnt know then I would've saved the seat reservation fees (apprx $200) and just either turned up for each train or made a day before booking in each country upon arrival. Undertand this advice is based on us travelling somewhat off-peak. FYC

Major cities are supported by the ICE train system in Germany. Allow about 2 hours between your flight schedule and your train connection as planes can be delay for numerous reasons and trains in Germany run on time. It's no big deal if you do miss your train - you just catch a later one. At some sectors between Frankfurt and Hanover the speed was indicated at over 275 km/hr. The first class carriages are warm and tend to be quiet compared to 2nd class. I can recommend the experience and look forward to this sector of my journey when traveling on business throughout Germany.

Whilst the train was very satisfactory we thought the staff could have been more helpful particularly as we had a connection to make at Coln and the train was running 8 minutes we asked the attendant for advice and were informed that we would be "informed" which didn't happen we had no idea which platform the train would arrive in on or how far it was to the platform for our connection. No help was offered.
