The train system in the UK is easy to figure out, but definitely made easier by getting a rail pass before you go. You save money by doing so too. Was a wise decision to purchase a pass before going.

While travelling in comfort from Bristol to Edinburgh and seeing lots of England and Scotland, I also discovered that 1st class train travel means you are given complimentary drinks and food during the whole journey. It really took some of the pressure off travelling.

Excellent value for money, but do your homework first as unless you use it for long trips and/or multiple trips it might not be cost-effective. However, for convenience (no queuing up for regular tickets) it is unsurpassed - you can just jump on and jump off any train, where and when you like within the time frame chosen. Readily acceptable by train staff, though surprisingly not widely recognised by many rail employees. I used it for planned trips, but also many spur-of-the-moment trips and thus saw parts of Britain that I would not have otherwise seen and experienced.

As fa female it was hard to drag a suitcase on and off the trains because of the steps, trains should have small platform attached that could slide out of train to reach station platform, also the train from Paris announcement apart from that the journey was good.

The rail pass was a convenient and economical way to travel around UK. I used it as a way to get from point to point but I'm sure it would work just as well as a method of touring UK. It is good value for money.

In the late 1980's I had the pleasure of boarding a whistle stop train on the West coast of Scotland. This was part of using my fIexi Britail pass. The train was very old and swayed and jerked and wound it's way around the coastline, stopping in each little shanty town. What delighted me was with each stop bought into my cold and stark carriage yet another amazing looking character, each of which would nod graciously at my obvious stranger status and proceed to sit themselves down with their favourite animal. Everybody smoked and the entire floor of the train was covered in cigarette butts. By the time I reached Stranraer, there was complete menagerie of every possible creature you could conceive you could transport . Not just dogs and cats, but chickens, pigs and sheep! Unsure if I was destined for some agricultural show myself, I waited til all disembarked to make sure I had arrived at the correct location with the equally antiquaited chappie in a conductor's hat. His instructions almost had me board a ship instead of the train station. Tired and confused I was told I shouldn't have shown my passport if I didn't really want to go to Ireland on the ferry! Rail travel is definitely the best way to meet the locals and have an adventure at the same time!

Worst trip Edinburgh to London The line (Eastern I think) had just a couple of days before disbanded their dining car for first class and gone to "at seat" service. Very unfortunate for travellers .. staff uninterested, we were uninformed of options .. seemed their was only one menu for our carriage which we found when it was too late to request food. Advertised free wifi .. worked for 1o minutes of trip.. staff unhelpful .. I had to ring someone on my mobile .. it came back for 5 minutes!! The southern or south western Par to Edinburgh although at seat service much better!

I generally liked the product, however travelling by rail in Britain is very expensive. I was disappointed that I had to pay for the London underground when travelling between National rail stations. I would probably hire a car next time as it is difficult to move and store luggage on the trains.

I am an older Person and come from the days when steam trains were the only way to travel ,. British Rail had started bringing in new fangled diesel but mainly the trains were still steam. When I was eight years old , my family went on holiday to Cornwall. Very few families owned cars in the late 50s and early 60s so train was the way to go . My father booked 2nd class seats on the Cornish Riviera , a train which we knew from the posters under the luggage rack on the local trains. In the poster It looked so grand snaking its way along the edge of water . We left bucket and spade in hand and I suppose Mum and Dad had the case . First we needed to cross London to get to Paddington. I am told that I thought I was were the Queen lived as the station was so large and so grand . The we went onto the station and the train was shunted and in by a Thomas the Tank type engine . We all found our seats and got on board and then Dad took us to the end of the platform where the large James type engine was being attached, or it could even have been a Gordon . Then we were off . It is still a very long journey but in those days was all day . Mum had packed sanwiches , but they seem to go very fast ,,SO for a very special treat , we were allowed to have afternoon tea in the dining car . It was my very first afternoon tea other than my mother's and the sandwiches came very finely cut and the plates and cups and saucers had the ensignia of the Great Western Railway . This then is how I first saw the sea along the Dawlish coastline where the train comes right down to the sea. Then there was the crossing of the Tamar to cross from one county to another . All the time thundering along with the wonderful noise that steam makes.. I have since learnt that when Dad was in the navy this was the train he used to get to Plymouth and so it was special to him and he wanted to make it special for his children . In 1990 we repeated the journey with Mum and Dad and three grand children . The train was not as grand and the tea car was a buffet but they still loved the excitement of that first long distance journey I do not remember any of the rest of that holiday but the train trip started a love affair with trains that has lasted to this day . I live in Australia now but have travelled on the Southern Aurora , the Ghan and the Overlander . I never fly between London and Paris anymore particularly when both St Pancreas and Gare Du Nord make it so easy to get on and off trains and reach other connections . My girls also now they are back packers and keen travellers all plan train trips into their journies as the trains are mostly in Centreville and save money getting to and from airports . The motto of this tale . To help the trains stay alive suggest to clients that for their children to experience a train journey and who knows how many future clients will stay true to trains
