Only get a first class ticket. There is much more availability for hop on hop off type trips, and if you reserve a seat (recommended on busy trips) it is free. The seats are generally more spacious, an in addition, on a number of main line services, meals are also provided free of charge, with most other services offering free tea or coffee. You do occasionally have to travel in standard accommodation when first is not provided, but his is usually only on local services.
