The Oyster card is exactly the same as the WA SmartRider card (Vic Myki), the tag on/tag off system (except buses where is it tag on only). Be warned at GBP 1.90/single trip for Zone 1 or 2 on the tube that a GBP 20.00 initial load on the card may not be enough. Top ups are easy to do at tube stations but with currency conversion fees applicable to credit card transactions this add up expense wise. I would recommend a GBP 30.00 or 40.00 initial load on the card if London and surrounds are high on the Bucket List and you are going to use public transport to get around. Other than that a VERY easy way to get around on the tube and London buses. Also, I registered my card on line for easy reference to the balance and for safety. But you need a UK telephone and post code to register. I just used my UK based friends details.

I used my card every day for four days for multiple trips, both short and long. My original credit ran out very quickly, it would have been helpful to have had the option of loading the card with a higher value to begin with. Whilst 'topping up' is relatively easy, it often required standing in a queue to do so which was time-wasting. Otherwise it is a 'must have' for any London visitor, and pre-purchasing made life a lot easier in the early stages, once you get used to the Underground the whole thing overall becomes easier.

We returned from Europe to Heathrow and had a long haul flight out so we decided to spend a day London before this. We stayed at a Heathrow hotel for ease of accessing terminals etc and used our Oyster Card to take underground into London, used it to get around to our galleries and shopping spots and then to return. The beauty of the card was that we can simply top it up next year when/if we return! It's easy to use and works out to be really economical. The information about the card was somewhat convoluted and could be readily simplified before the Olympics!

The Oyster card is a versatile way of traveling in London if you do not use it that often. It has one major drawback, compared to a travelcard, and that is when the card runs out, and has to be topped up. Most of the gates do not display the balance left, and in my experience it will only tell you it has run out at the most inconvenient time, usually at peak hour, when there are long queues at the machines and ticket offices.

Oyster is (almost) the pinnacle of integrated ticketing. It works exceptionally well and exceptionally fast. Very happy we got these. So easy to use - if you don't have any conflicting cards in your wallet, you can even leave the Oyster in your wallet and just tap your wallet against the reader which is what we did. This is an Oyster "visitor" card which you unfortunately cannot register online to get the balance, but you can use kiosks at Tube stations to check. I got a history statement from the ticket office at King's Cross just before leaving as a souvenir.

The Oyster Card was one of the best pre-purchases we made before leaving home. Only wish Paris had a similar system. Easy to use not only on the London Underground and metro trains but also on the buses. Never having to queue for the ticket machine and finding you don't have the right money or enough change or just understanding how the ticket machine works, which happened in France. Our card had 20 pounds credit and used it for 4 days in and around London and still haven't had to put more credit on it. Will use next time in London - no expiry date, brilliant. As the old saying goes "don't leave home without one". 5 STARS!

Product was good. You just have to know what stations to get on and off. Maybe an intro pack could come with the oyster card with a tube map etc. Luckiky i used the tfl mobile website.

The card is great when it works correctly, failing to see and use exit card readers caused the card to register a maximum fee, this was corrected by friendly underground staff. There were some times when the fee seemed completely arbitory, but on a couple of occasions it was in our favour. Easily the best way to travel in London, just keep an eye out for the card readers.

We ordered Oyster cards with the maximum amount possible (20 pounds) before leaving. As feared, this diappeared quite quickly however loading the cards with more money was not as much of a problem as we were expecting from reading other reviews of the product on this site. What was more of a hassle was trying to ascertain the cost of each trip taken and what the remaining balance on the cards was. Initially,we believed that we had to go to a manned counter to find this out, but then found out that the balance and card use history can be dispayed by the passing the card over the reader at the loading machines. Don't bother using the card for ferry trips on the London transport system as the cost is in the order of 5 pounds for short trip between two adjacent stops. A question to the Moderator: We would like to have learned more about hooking the Oyster Card up with a Travelcard like the locals do but were not sure if that was possible, how to do it and what (if any) benefits it may offer. Please advise.

Moderator: "Rail Plus only sells the Oyster Card and Travelcard as standalone products. They are not able to be joint or 'hooked up'."

Either struggling with luggage through London's Tube system or hopping on a bus,I found the Oystercard so convenient. I didn't have to queue for a ticket, because I had pre-ordered the card online. Therefore I was able to just swipe the card, push my luggage along and catch my train. Might I also add that London Transport staff were wonderfully helpful as I tried to juggle card, suitcase, backpack - my fault, too much luggage!

Oyster is to London as Myki is to Melbourne and is the best and cheapest way round the city. I'd recommend you get one before you go. Just one warning - Oyster can't be used on the Heathrow Express (or Heathrow Connect) trains: we knew this before we went, but you might not. The map we got from RailPlus was a little out of date - some closed lines were actually open when we got there and had been for some time. Get yourself a new one when you arrive. Be careful with some "touch off" points though - as you change lines between say, the "Overground" and the "Underground", you have to revalidate, and the machine isn't very obvious.

Moderator: "The map we give out with docs has been updated now."

The Oyster Card is definitely the way to go for transport in London, however the costs do still add up if you're travelling around quite a bit. Make sure you put a bit of money on there so you don't have to keep topping it up. Very convenient though, as you don't have to line up to buy a ticket every time you go to the station, so its much faster to get through the turnstiles. A great product, just keep an eye on how much you have on there.

I used the Oyster card most days over a two week vacation. It was great! As I could top it up either with cash or credit card at machines located at the tube stations, I was always ready to go on multiple trips per day. I even found that on shorter over ground journeys such as Kew so again, no long lines to stand in.

Easy to use, though you don't know how much the trip is going to cost you before you use it. It is confusing when you are transfering between underground and National rail stations. I don't think it is fair that I had to exit, pay and re-enter when changing lines at Hammersmith. This is not clear on the map, otherwise I would have chosen a different route. The underground is very expensive

We had all sorts of trouble with the cards not reading properly. Also,I suspect that the credit on the cards was being used up at a greater rate than was fair despite the cards being scanned at the beginning and end of each journey.
