The trains were clean, very punctual and people very courteous & the good things, no graffiti, rubbish or mobile phones ringing. A most pleasant travel experience.

Had initial concerns about finding the correct stations/platforms/trains and purchasing tickets but once we arrived in Japan things fell quite easily into place. The Kansai region is beautiful in autumn, everything is very clean, and the people are polite and very helpful even when not speaking English.

Good way to travel comfortably on trains, when you don't have deadlines, is to take your time and travel outside peak hours. We enjoyed that sort of relaxed travel. Straphanging on a train for an hour or two in a crush after a day of footslogging, even around the loveliest of temples, gardens and parks, takes the gloss off a bit. Would be good if there were tourist passes for non-consecutive days.

The West pass would have been better if it covered the entire Kansai region!

7. "Was good, but would be good to be able to use Shinkansen"

Moderator: "A Shinkansen is commonly known as a bullet train. The Nozomi Shinkansen is the only bullet train which is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. The Nozomi runs between Tokyo and Osaka and from Tokyo all the way to Hakata (Fukuoka) stoping at major stops along the way. Japan Rail Pass holders should use Hikari trains on these services."

8. "Good for local travel, so long as you can travel outside peak hours. Only value if you use every day and for a bit of distance travel, local jr trains not expensive."

Pick your time for travel as distance stuff, eg to/from Kyoto on weekend in Autumn[and I imagine spring] will see you packed like an upright sardine for 1 to 2 hours depending where from- we were lucky to be aboard before Kobe and so were seated. If you are free to pick times then stay another night and travel between peaks on weekdays- trains are pleasant and seating usually available. [Unless you love it squeezy?]
