The JR pass was so easy to use. We had a seven day pass & it was worth every cent we paid for it. We more than covered the cost as we travelled through 7 different cities in Japan. The trains were always on time. Spotlessly clean & comfortable. Toilets on board were also spotlessly clean. It's the best way for tourists to travel in Japan. Second time we have used it & buying online was so eay. Paid with paypal & it all came in the mail in plenty of time. Highly recommended!

If you're planning to travel around Japan then buying a Japan Rail Pass is definitely worthwhile. Not really sure about value for money as we weren't really able to find many sites that gave us "regular" train ticket prices, however we weren't too bothered about this as in terms of ease and enjoyment of travel, buying a rail pass is DEFINITELY worthwhile. All you need to do is flash the pass to the rail guards at the platform and off you go, no need to try and decipher the complicated ticket machines or wait in cues. Only downfall is you can't travel on their metro system which sometimes means you need to walk a bit further to a station with a JR line, but other than that it was fantastic.

Our purchase of the rail pass was very easy and efficient and the conversion of the voucher to the pass at the rail station was also very easy. We did book some seats on our longer trips and this is advised to ensure you get the train you want. If booking these trips it is a good idea to write down the train number, time and where it is going from and to and present that to the person you are booking through.

Having the JR Pass made travelling much simpler, not having to negotiate the coin machines and figure out costs to buy tickets, walking straight through the wide guards barriers with our luggage, and pre-paid so that we knew how much we were spending. Perfect for our cross country hopping between cities! No valid for most of the city underground or some local trains, but for the spacious carriages on the bullet trains and efficient and smooth travel, it's definitely worth it.

The Japan rail passes are an excellent way to explore Japan. They are simple and easy to use. We had a brilliant time exploring Japan using them. They enable you to book seats on the Shinkansen (bullet train) to move quickly from city to city and also allow you to access local rail/ferry services that ate also run by Japan Rail. You can't use the tickets on the Tokyo metro but you can use them on the Tokyo loop (Yamanote line) that goes to most major areas/stations in Tokyo. We'd strongly recommend rail passes (we've used them in Europe and Japan).

I bought the 7 day rail pass for my trip to Japan, and it definitely made travel through the country easier and cheaper. Once activated all you have to do is show your pass at the manned ticket counter and you're on the train. What's more is you can reserve a seat on the Shinkansen bullet train in advance, so you can always get a seat. One minor negative is that this rail pass can only be used on JR rail lines, so some places you plan on visiting may use a different train company. I highly recommend the JR pass if you plan on exploring a number of cities when in japan. The further travel the more you will save!!

This rail pass is well worth the money. Subway/train/bullet train/tram etc can be expensive as we found on our last day as our JR pass ran out the night before. With the Jr pass we were able to visit the majority of places we wanted to go. Just couple of short trips on local lines here and there but being short trips they only cost a couple of dollars. The Jr pass makes traveling easy as when you walk though the ticket check section it also provides and excellent op to ask for directions etc.

I could easily change my plans with the flexibility of the Japan Rail Pass. No need to book a ticket for every trip, saving loads of time in queuing at the ticketing office. I have the flexibility to make reservations for busy route, with no extra cost. Paying for train fare soon add up if you buy for tickets when you're in Japan. The JR Pass may seem expensive upfront, but you'll soon find the return on investment after the first few train trips.

I bought the 7 day Japan Pass for a recent stay in Tokyo with a plan to see Nikko just north of Tokyo and a weekend in Kyoto. In hindsight, I wish I had planned on further travel as the bullet train system is so efficient. Trains are clean and modern, extremely efficient and easy to use. Signs at Railways and subway stations are in Japanese and English as are the announcements. Reserving a seat never presented a problem. The JR Pass cannot be used on the Nazomi and this is no big deal as the other bullet trains are fantastic. I travelled with my husband who decided not to buy a pass and he would have easily spent at least twice as much as I did on train fares compared with the cost of the JR pass. It is not just the cost of the pass that is such a winner, the convenience is a big factor as well. In Tokyo, I could travel on JR lines and I bought a Suica card for the subways, 2000yen (about $22 unlimited travel/time) which could also be used to buy food/drinks from vending machines. I would definitely recommend getting a JR Pass if you plan on "training it" in Japan. PS The cherry blossoms were amazing this year, Japan really is a lovely place with lovely people. My tip: Get out into the country and see some of the forested and alpine areas as well as Tokyo.

The rail pass made travel in Japan very easy. During our 3 weeks in Japan, we took: - Narita Express to Shibuya - 10 high-speed Shinkansen trips (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima) - countless metropolitan JR trains in Tokyo & Osaka - JR ferry to Miyajima - monorail to Haneda airport All that was covered by the rail pass. It was painless and a great way to get around. Would've been quite difficult without the rail pass. It's quite expensive, but when you add up the cost of all the train travel you do, it's worth it in the end. We got our money's worth. The train system in Japan is really awesome. We used ours on four trips out of the City, loved the experience and ease of the JRPass. The shinkansens are punctual, clean and very, very fast. Pick up an English timetable (if applicable), when you first arrive, they are easy to follow, and you know they will be on time. We didn't purchase the First Class tickets, not sure if it is worth the extra, maybe someone else can comment. Japan is such an easy country to travel around, especially with the JP Railpass. This was the second time that our family has used a Japan Rail Pass and we had just as much fun this time as our first experience! Traveling on a shinkansen (bullet train) is a great way to see the countryside. The train carriages are very comfortable and immaculately kept. All staff are exceptionally courteous and the ticket collectors, tea trolley ladies and cleaners bow to passengers as they enter and exit the carriages. We can't wait to visit Japan again and we will certainly be using a Japan Rail Pass to move around the country.

Very good way to move around between cities in Japan. We tended to book our seats on the trains that we used rather than just take our chances with non-reserved seats because that way we could make sure about any connections that were required.

We were in Japan for 3 weeks, mostly in Tokyo with a weekend in Kyoto. We arranged seven day rail passes for 3 adults and one child in the week before we left and the exchange pass was delivered within a day of my online order. A week before we were due to leave Tokyo, we went to the nearest JR office (within our local train station - Shinagawa) and exchanged the pass for a Rail Pass and while we were there, booked our seats on the Shinkansen to Kyoto and also our trip back to Narita airport (all using the rail pass). We then enjoyed a week of very simple train trips on the Tokyo subway (with the JR Pass you just go through the information counter, no trying to work out train tickets etc)and seamless trips on the very comfortable and incredibly clean and efficient shinkansen and narita express trains. Definitely recommend the JR pass, it's so simple!

U have to get this if ur travelling in Japan. Each city has a loop JR line. If you have to use the other met lines its not to expensive ~280 yen and there are machines to adjust fares at each station in english. Just get a map of the train system for the city at information when u find one. However if ur visiting more then 1 city u have to get it before u leave the country, u can not buy in Japan.

We visited six cities in nine days along the JR West-Sanyo line on our recent holiday to Japan. Commencing our trip from Osaka and travelling as far as Hiroshima with several stops in between, our seven day rail passes afforded us flexible and super efficient travel on Japan's bullet trains. Whether travelling by reserve or non reserved seat the JR pass made travel simple and very pleasurable. By purchasing our rail passes we probably saved several hundred dollars in train fares but the most valuable aspect of travel on the Japan Rail network is the amount of time saved getting to the next destination, which can be better spent sightseeing and discovering new places!

We took a 14 day Rail Pass and got at least twice the value out of our investment. Easy to use. Well recognised throughout Japan. We are well travelled and far from inexperienced when it comes to getting value for money - some call us skinflints!!!? We are retired and our $s need to stretch, so the Rail Pass allowed us to enjoy Japan with no hassles, convenience, comfort and well within our budget. Thanks.

The Japan rail pass is a must for 7 or 14 days, you can use the pass on most trains in the cities and to travel throughout the country. Trains are plentiful, clean, comfortable and super fast. English signage is on all platforms so easy to follow and the crew on the trains are just so lovely, a very relaxing way to see a lot of Japan.

The holiday in Japan was so much more enjoyable knowing that we could go anywhere and not have to buy tickets. The first ride on the Hikari railstar from Kyoto to Shin Yokahama was amazingly smooth, fast, clean, comfortable and exactly on time. Every train after that was a pleasure. We went on Sakura, Kodoma, Limited express, Lex and local and made every connection as every train ran exactly to the timetable. Used the trains 10 days out of 14 and still got double the cost. Rarely needed to use a bus, but recommend bus from Tokushima to Kansai airport rather than train. Fantastic holiday

Couldn't believe how quickly the Rail Pass arrived from Rail Plus (compared to previous Japan trips when I had ordered via other sources). Next day delivery is terrific service. The pass is great value if traveling cross country or even from one island to another in Japan. Understanding the rail network is easy, navigating around/through the huge main stations is more difficult so allow sufficient time to get from one section/platform to another.

Good choice if wanting to take long trips by train as it is then great value for money. Able to be used on the shinkansen/bullet train (except Nozomi). Easy to use as just needs to be shown to staff at rail stations - do not need to have passport with you to use it. Do note that only valid for JR trains so does not work on local trains and subway but all long trips have JR tracks. Can also be used on JR buses if they are available where you are holidaying.

These passes made traveling around so simple and easy. The train we took were all great and very efficient. I would use them again. I did find them a bit pricey and it was difficult to try to compare individual train segment costs to evaluate value, but the ease of use made up for that.

overall this was worthwhile for me but should be used wisely to extract maximum value. this pass is not worthwhile whilst hanging in one big city like Tokyo or Kyoto, but on the otherhand great value for money when travelling cross country on the shinkansen in particular. I should have bought a 1 week pass for my inter-city travels but not activated it until I was leaving Tokyo. The pass is very easy and hassle free to avoid needing any tickets on JR lines though, so has value in convenience as well

Use the future date activation option to get the tickets at the airport (eliminate hassle of getting to the train station and then finding the JR office)

My daughter and I bought the 14 day JR pass and visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kobe , Takayama and then back to Tokyo. We LOVED travelling by train in Japan as the trains are so fast, clean, comfortable and dependable.Only wish the airlines seats were as spacious! We could reserve seats on most trains very easily but if short on time, we jumped on the first few unreserved carriages without a problem. The trains were always on time and the staff were extremely helpful if we needed advice on finding the right platform or similar information. Our favourite trip was the journey from Nagoya to Takayama, snaking through the beautiful river valley and the little villages.

The JR network is excellent, giving you access to many places from cities to tiny rural towns. I have bought this pass a few times and not needed to use any other rail or bus services. This pass will easily pay for itself if you are travelling on express trains (anything with a seat reservation). But if you can travel on regular services this pass wouldn't be worthwhile.

My wife and I have just returned from a two week trip to Japan and used the Japan Rail Pass extensively. The rail system is incredibly efficient and punctual. The trains are spotlessy clean and we had no trouble reserving seats on the Shinkansens and Limited Express trains we travelled on. We mostly travelled outside peak hours and often had only a few other passengers in our carriage. It can be a bit confusing tranferring to the local transport systems in the big city stations but we found the tourist information offices located at the main stations to be very helpful in guiding us to our hotel etc. Just be patient and polite and you will rewarded. Remember to check the dates are correct on your rail pass when it is issued. Initially we were issued with seven day passes instead of the fourteen day passes indicated on the exchange vouchers. The assistant was apologetic and a bit embarrassed when I pointed out the error and immediately issued two fourteen day passes. All the rail staff we encountered were polite and as helpful as possible, despite the language difficulties, which weren't as bad as we expected. Another tip is to travel light. Our medium sized suitcases were ok and fitted in the overhead racks on the trains but we will take less clothing on our next trip. Japan is well worth a visit and the Japan Rail pass is a great way to get around. Buy one. Domo Arigato (thank you) and Sayonara.

I loved the Japan Rail Pass as it allowed me to explore so much of this incredible country in such a short period of time (10 days). The Japan Rail Pass was also my saviour on the day of my departure from Osaka Airport to return to Australia. We lost track of time within the fascinating A-Bomb museum in Hiroshima, and by the time we returned to Hiroshima Station, our only travel option to Osaka Airport was via 2 connecting trains that would arrive at Osaka Airport 5 mins before our check-in counter closed! Because of the efficiency of the JR network, and the trains enabled by our JR Passes, we made our flight back home just in the nick of time! Cheers JR & Rail Plus!

Essentially JR Pass delivered as expected. It is good value. One point to watch is the confusion that can exist surrounding JR published services and some lines that may have passed to private ownership. We got caught out on a journey from Tottori to Kyoto and were required to pay the on board guard ... who, by the way, was wearing a uniform with JR badging. Even the staff at Kyoto station had difficulty among themselves establishing exactly who owned what. Our route guide and pass showed this 'Limited Express' to match ticket conditions. We lost the argument.

The JR pass gives the traveller many options for travel - trains, ferries, buses. The booking process is simple and efficient and validating the pass is easy... Finding the correct JR office to validate the pass at Tokyo station did take some time, but that was the only headache. The Japan rail service is as efficient as any German service I've experienced, and just about each trip we took across Japan ran hourly. Definately a must have when travelling through Japan.

Not being able to speak English did not make it hard to use the JR pass. There is enough English on the stations, and always an English speaking rail crew at Info counter. Travelling around Japan was so easy. We had numerous journeys on the Shinkensen & JR trains. The JR system is so fast and efficient transport system. We saved a heap of money by using the JR pass, and would strongly urge other travellers to purchase one before going to Japan. My heart goes out to Japan at the moment. Absolutely love all the Japanese people. x x

In the seven days in Japan we visited, Hiroshima, Myajima, Kyoto, Nagoya, Tokyo and a day trip to Nikko - a must visit site. Hakkone Circuit could be a visit reserved for either before or after activating rail pass. If interested in Japanese history scratch below the surface in Kyoto. We used rail pass to travel to Niseko for skiing. Did not realize that it was a public Holiday and left booking too late - had reserved standing place for 2.5 hours of the 9 hour journey. Most challenging part of Japan is negotiating the underground stations. Never ask a Japanese person' "Is this the correct way?" - It is impolite to disagree with you - Ask instead, "Which is the way?"

JR service is excellent , timely and super efficient. On some of the busy routes remember to make reservations in advance. At Sapporo Central Station on a busy morning we were met by a JR customer service young lady who would put many airline flight atttendants to shame and had our desired itinerary with 3 train changes to Tokyo sorted and reserved tickets issued in less than 5 minutes. My only wish is that there were some other options on the JR pass - perhaps for say 5 days travel in a month similar to Eurail options.

Although slightly annoying to organise, especially at the Japanese end, it really isn't that hard and once you have it you can use it around Tokyo on the Yamonote line and also if it is within the time limit you can get to the airport with it. Plus hopping on a bullet train to Kyoto or Osaka or Nara or anywhere is a great thing to do and walking through the ticket points and flashing your Japan rail pass gives you a great sense of freedom.

The easiest way to travel in Japan is by train - long distances by Shinkansen, locally on JR tracks and even in suburban Tokyo on JR tracks. The JR stations are the most conveniently located - and with a JR pass our whole family were able to go through the gates quickly. Having that Japan Rail Pass took ALL the hassle and worry out of the travel around the country - organising reserved seat tickets was free and relatively easy - and organising a travel itinerary is very easy with the help of the Japan Rail web site "hyperdia". The upfront cost is very quickly offset if you are travelling - all in all a great deal. Our holiday would not have been as wonderful without it. And the RailPlus staff here in Australia were fantastic!!! Thank you.

The train service in Japan is fast and convenient. Trains are scheduled frequently and it is most unusual if they don't run to time. Not all train services are Japan Rail so the pass is not universally usable but major links between the airport and Tokyo and Tokyo and other cities are covered. Japan rail staff are very helpful. We plan to use a Japan Rail pass again.

We tried to book them on the day of travel and it wasn't possible. We also couldnt get on one train as it was full [ all Shinkansens seem to have 3 carriages which are non reserved] . Trains fill up quickly, but this could have been due to our time of travel ; Dec/Jan

JR Pass gave us the convenience to travel almost anywhere in Japan. We bought the green car pass and it was proven to be the best choice we made as we travelled with two young children (4years old and 1.5 years old) and an elderly person (79 years old). Note: Green car normally has less people in it so our children can sit on their own but be aware that some routes don't have green cars fasilities, eg. Kyoto-Hiroshima route. In this case, we were given seats in the ordinary silence car and our children had to sit on our laps for the whole journey. We also bought the suica cards in Tokyo in anticipation to travel around Tokyo and to Hakone (JR pass only cover the travel between Tokyo and Odawara), however, we didn't need to use them at all. We returned the cards to the JR office in Narita airport for a refund. They refunded the amount which wasn't used (2000 yen) minus 210 yen for the admin fees for each card. When you travel especially with young kids and/or eldery people, try to avoid peak hours (7.30-9 am) and (5-7pm). if you have to travel during those peak hours, then feel free to ask those ignorant young people to give their seats to your kids/older relatives.

Being able to hop on and off the shinkansen as much as you like is just awesome. When I was living in Japan I never caught it because a single trip was so expensive! The JR Pass makes it easy. This time round I got an English timetable which helped! It would be good if there was a timetable that only listed Hikari/Kodama services on the main line. A few minutes with a highlighter might do it. It also saved a lot of money just commuting round Tokyo. We stayed in Kanda because it was cheaper, and once we discovered the Chuo Kaisoku line we could be in Shinjuku in 15 minutes. Easy.

It gave us carefree journey around Japan. The rails timetable provided us to plan before the holiday. We had to use a rental car for 12 hours to see the National park area. Compared to the cost of car rental rail was much easier and cheaper to use.But if you cannot read any Japanese and no knowledge on geography it would be impossible to use the pass to its maximum value. We had great time in Hokkaido.

The JR Pass makes rail travel in Japan - both regional and urban - a real breeze. We saved time and money with this pass, and our sanity - any non-Japanese speaking traveller in Tokyo station at peak hour will understand. With our pass we were waved through every ticket gate quickly and without the slightest problem. Will definitely use the Pass again.

We used the pass to travel from Nagoya to Takayama then back to Nagoya, then on to Kyoto, then Hiroshima and finally Tokyo. The train tickets are expensive if you get them there so this was definitely the best option. In Tokyo we did not use the pass much as we used the metro alot of the time to get around and the pass does not cover the metro. If spending most time in Tokyo i would not recommended a rail pass. Metro is pretty cheap but not that easy to figure out in terms of which ticket you need but the Japanese are overly helpful so it is easy.

I purchased the 7 day Japan Rail pass and found it very convenient and easy to use. It also provided good value for money based on the extent of use I made of it. I would certainly recommend travelling by train throughout Japan. The trains were always on time, clean, comfortable and ran frequently. Not speaking Japanese made it daunting but the staff were always friendly and helpful and I experienced no problems with either the use of the Japan Rail Pass or with using the rail system.

The rail passes are fantastic, unlimited travel on JR trains made life in Japan very easy. Often people will caution you that unless you plan on extensive travel within Japan, they are not good value for money. This is possibly true if you only see one or two cities, but we visited 6 cities on a 14 day pass and some of our trips would have been very expensive if we'd had to buy the tickets individually. Train travel in Japan is so efficient and easy to use that you can easily take a day trip to a city hundreds of miles away and return in the evening without issue. With the rail pass, you can easily board any train, including the unreserved bullet train carriages, without any prior booking. This means that travelling on impulse or changing plans is very easy. If you wish to have a reserved seat, which we would recommend for long journeys, you simply go to the booking counter and they will give you a pass. We found the Hyperdia website useful, using it to write down train numbers, times and dates which the non-english speaking staff could easily understand. You can also book your seats way in advance at any JR booking counter, allowing you to plan your entire trip if you are organised enough. We had a green pass which allows travel in the equivalent of 'business class' but the regular seats are still pretty good and the additional expense was probably not worth it. One of the advantages of the green cars is that they are less popular so you are more likely to get a booking for a popular route. The pass does not include the Nozomi trains, but they are identical to the regular bullet trains, but stop less. On a big trip from the north to the south, the Nozomi does save some time, but not enough to warrant their additional cost. The pass covers JR buses as well as JR Ferries, helpful if you want to visit island attractions such as Miyajima.

It took a while for me to realise that it would be easier to open the pass at the date each time so that I was not held up by the ticket inspector taking the pass and opening it for me to double check the date - and they always check! Saves so much hastle in having to buy tickets. The only temptation is to travel more than you should because you can and you can exceed your physical capabilities and travel too far and see too much!

Given that JR Pass is only available to non-residents I would of thought that the staff at JR desks would have a little better understanding of Enlish (or other)language/s. Also signage was adequate in some places but not at all places. I found that writing my destination and time of departure on paper and handing it over was usually sufficient to get the correct ticket. It was sometimes difficult to figure out what platform (track) the trains would depart. I think the JR Pass was excellent value and can only admire the efficiency of the rail system in Japan

The japanese are just so so clever and organised and the train system just reflects this (only one better is the japanese toilet!!) There was nothing to dislike about the whole train experience from being dropped off at the station, resevering tickets, getting onto the station and boarding the train - easy as. We went in the green cars for a bit of extra space as we had luggage. Suggestion - do reserve a ticket instead of just boarding the train - it is really simple PS Loved the smoking cars although we travelled in the non smoking cars.

After 3 days in crazy Tokyo, we decided to take a seaside trip to a small suburb/town about one hour away that was recommended for the temples and scenery. Our first big trip on the Japan Train network and we were a bit worried how we would go. However to our delight is was clean, easy, fastÂ?.as easy as catching a train in Australia and in many ways still an amazing cultural experience for travellers!!! We were a group of six travellers with one giant of a man from Denmark, 6'6" blonde Scandinavian who had to duck to get through the train doors, and to all our amusement sat on one long seat surrounded but some tiny Japanese girls who didn't reach his shoulders. I must also say they have the best train etiquette of anywhere I have been, no mobile phones are allowed to be used, and there was no rubbish or graffiti. On the cultural side there was a fascinating comparison of the old and new. Old ladies in Kimono and young funky Harajuku girl in crazy get ups all travelling together and us. A local train has never been so interesting and so much fun.

Note to self: Never travel at peak hour if you have luggage or backpacks. My partner and I got caught in peak hour madness from Yokohama to Tokyo and boy if you think our trains get crowded here in Sydney, then you haven't had a real peak hour train experience yet. In Japan they employ station guards whose job is to litterally push the people into carriage to make all the commuters fit inside. My boyfriend and I were seperated in the process and having two huge backpacks did not help. I could feel three strangers breathing down my neck and I could not escape it as there was no room to move around. The funny thing is, everyone on the train didn't complain. They just all stood there squashed up against one another. I guess that was just a normal train ride for them. One man even fell asleep with his face squashed up against the window and I could hear him snoring very lightly!

This rail pass does make your life easier. You just show it to the person at the gate and in no time you're on the train toward your destination. Two points that I would like to make: 1. Please calculate your exact travel as it may be cheaper (although not as convenient) to buy individual fares. 2. To issue the pass at the JR station please note which stations have the ability to do so and their opening times. Otherwise all is sweet. Japan has a wonderful train network. I want the same in Australia :-(

Second time using the pass as a Japan frequent visitor. Great value if you are travelling a lot. If you are on tight schedules and need to book more than just the slowest routes, this pass is not the best. Despite what has been stated, you cannot just pay the difference to get on the faster trains running the same lines (e.g. Nozomi), you need to pay the full amount for a new ticket. A bit painful, but if you can schedule your time around the trains you know you can take with the pass then it works ok. If they expanded and added another pass at a higher price to properly cover all the JR trains and express routes then this would be flawless.

Moderator: "The 'Nozomi' bullet train is the fastest train service running in Japan, and is not included on the Japan Rail Pass, however there are many other JR bullet trains that do these routes that are high speed."

The one week pass is great as long as you plan your itinerary to cover large distances. This means that you need to plan to finish off at a place you want to spend time at, or start there before initializing your Japan Rail Pass. If you discover Nirvana half way through, then it's not economical to stay there! Consider the following as my favorite way to use a 1 week pass. Base yourself in Kyoto - it's within easy reach of 2 international airports, being Osaka and Nagoya.Check in to one of the great budget priced accommodations and use it as a base - no need to carry luggage anywhere, which is a great bonus! Now use you Japan Rail Pass to get pretty much anywhere - Tokyo is only a couple of hours - go there a couple of times if you need. Heading south and all the major spots are also only a couple of hours!

This product only suits people wishing to travel to 3 or more states/areas that are significantly spread apart and require the Shinkansen otherwise you may as well just buy a single journey ticket each time you travel. You also are required to show this pass to the station officers each time you board the station which is a hassle if there is a long queue. I recommend opting for the Suica instead. It was extremely easy to use, simply showing the ticket officer at the gate is all you need to do. It saves time and money. However I do disagree with the fact that the Japan Rail Pass cannot be re-issued in case if lost or stolen because its a lot of money, people place an extreme amount of importance on these passes in their travels and unfortunately things can go wrong. Without a re-issue (even if its a small fee like in Eurpoe) its extremely unsafe as it leaves the travel either broke from spending money on tickets again or stranded at a location. One other suggestion is that the Exchange Office (where the Rail Passes are activated) should have opening hours the same times as the Information Centres in the train station as well as being consistent within each 'suburb' to ease stress and confusion. Overall though, the whole concept of the Japan Rail Pass made our trip extremely easy and time efficient!

It was a simple matter at the end of each leg to go to the Japan Rail Office at each station and arrange the next ticket which included booked seats. In addition while in Hiroshima we went to Miyajima by rail and ferry and found the pass covered this trip as well. It worked well for us because of the amount of travel that we did, but I would suggest a fare comparison with the cost of the rail pass if only making a few rail journeys.

The only problem we had was in Fukuoka , we wanted to visit a traditional village and had to pay for a few different trains to get there as there were no JR trains to the area. However, the JR pass was widely accepted readily from the friendly rail staff from Tokyo to Kobe, Kokura, Osaka. We could catch the express trains and bullet trains quite freely.

I was quite happy with the JR pass. It is very easy to use and has a small benefit in that it lets people know you are a foreignor so they are more likely to offer you assistance and directions. The Japanese were very friendly and helpful to me despite the language barrier. If you are not travelling across the whole country, it may be worth considering other variants of the pass, for example if you are staying down the bottom of the country, consider the cheaper JRWest pass, while it will not get you up to areas like Tokyo, it will likely get you to anywhere you want to go around Kansai/Osaka. When catching the trains, I had no problems getting a seat, even though I never booked one, there were always seats available in non-reserved carriages. If travelling a long way on the Bullet style trains, check which train you are getting on, they pass through very regularly, and sometimes it is better to wait ten minutes to get a faster train that stops less often, just be careful to not board the Nizomi as this is the only bullet train not covered by the pass.

We only had 2 weeks in Japan & travelled vast distances in a short period. All trains were spotlessly clean & punctual, most had power points to allow for computers & recharging batteries, seats were comfortable & reclined, leg space was ample. The on-board trolley service was handy for snacks & meals. We opted to sleep in our seats for the overnight trip to the Sapporo Snow Festival in the far north. Unfortunately the trains used for both trips to & from the Festival came straight out of The Ark. Sleeping on the floor in the carpeted sleeping rooms, or in a sleeping car would have been a better alternative. (Their was an extra charge for these alternatives) The Pass was easy to use and good value. Seeing the sights from the comfort of a fast moving, heated, modern carriage was great. Recharging camera batteries during the journey was very handy. Travelling in the depths of winter we soon realised that it is much nicer to sit in comfort and look out at the falling snow & snow covered houses, fields & peaks than it is to actually walk through the snow. I loved Japan & hope to return to see this beautiful country in a season other than Winter. And I will be buying a rail pass for my next trip as it gives you flexibility to travel long distances very quickly, in comfort, at a time that suits the individual.

Railpass is a great idea if you are travelling far and wide across Japan. We only took two train trips in Japan in the week we were travelling so individual train tickets would probably have been a more economical option. If I was to travel for any longer, the pass would be much better value.

Having not been to Japan before we were keen to see the country rather than flying from city to city. Our primary reason for the trip was for skiing in the north island of Hokkaido, but we wanted to visit other cities. We purchased to lots of 7 day JR passes as while skiing we wouldn't be using them. We activated the passes at Osaka JR Station and reserved seats on the various stages. The assistant had a little English and was very helpful in working out a timetable to suit us. Our travel was from Osaka to Hiroshima then back to Nagoya, then up to Hachinohe. Then by conventional trains( still quite fast 100 - 120kph) with a couple of changes to Sappora. After Skiing we returned by a similar route to Tokyo, 2 nights and out to Narita Airport (express). All the trains are very clean and the service is always right on time to the minute. Very simple to use the JR passes and all the JR staff are very helpful. The Shinkansen trains are amazing so smooth and fast 280 - 300 kph. All in all we found it a very easy and great way to travel through Japan, we covered a lot of their country.

The Japan Rail Pass makes travelling around Japan via train so easy. I have travelled through Europe on the Eurail Pass so was expecting the same problems, but Japan Rail is so different. The pass made my trip stress free - it was just so easy. It's easy to navigate, organised and on time. The Japan Rail Pass encourages you to get out of the city and explore Japan's country side - which is breath taking. If you are only planning on a single trip e.g. tokyo to kyoto it probably isn't economical, but if you want to do a few day trips here and there I definately recommend it.

We got a 7 day rail pass and only activated it after being in Japan for three days. This worked well as we saved so much money without having to get the 14 day pass. If you can work out your days and pay for the shorter trips first (Osaka to Kyoto - approx $13 AUD one way) then activate the pass for the longer trips - your laughing! We loved the trains and it can be overwhelming but catch your breath, ask for help and you will be sitting back in semi-recliner comfy chair watching the Japanese landscape - literally fly - by!

Great for long trips and airport travel on the KIX-Osaka train line. A bit useless in Osaka city since you have to use subway tickets. Great for long trips, including Osaka-Tokyo trip (my long distance travel totaled over 9 hrs, including trips to Uno for Naoshima, Kanazawa, and Tokyo). Good for Tokyo as there are some handy JR lines (but you will still need some subway tickets), but only worth it if you are planning on taking a day trip out of the city.

For our ~3 weeks holiday the 2 week Rail Passes allowed a very flexible travel itinerary - often booking seats on the day of travel without any problems due to off-peak season. The 2 week pass represents good value if doing a reasonable amount of travel although there was a range of discount deals going on in Japan - but no English explanations available we could see. It can be confusing which trains you need to reserve seats or which ones you can just show your pass - some more research or clearer directions would be useful! Overall, the pass was very easy to use and I would highly recommend it for those wishing to visit a number of different places during their stay or retain flexibility to travel when & where they desire. We also received excellent service obtaining the initial voucher and associated rail pass information kit from Rail Plus.

This is the second time we've been to Japan and also the second time we purchased a JR Pass. We think the era is well and truly over for a 'paper card' pass that you must guard with all your life and always anxious of losing.. It's time JR Pass moves on to the 21st century, to use an electronic based ticket with online authentication / activation facility, reprinting service (even for a fee) if ticket is lost.. Also our experience with 'Hokutosei', the sleeper train to Sapporo is something very strange and peculiar. Diesel locomotive combined with all metal squat toilet which stinks makes you feel you're on your way to Pyongyang, not Sapporo. The sleeper cabin is also very basic and a little cramped.. with limited stowage space for luggage and bags. The toilet was actually so bad that we had to skip brushing our teeth that night. Admittedly, we board the train at Sendai at 23.30.. we probably should've board the train earlier from Ueno to familiarise ourselves with Hokutosei.. and what it offers. I was told there's a dining car and even shower room.. but to be honest we were discouraged to venture out that late.. thinking it would all be shut anyway. We also question the value of Hokutosei.. at around AUD200 per head, it's cheaper to travel with Shinkansen during the day, and get a nice hotel for the night at your destination. A nice three stars hotel can be had for less than AUD200. All in all, Japan Rail pass still represent a good value for multiple cities travel in Japan, definitely recommended for all travellers. Ah.. how we miss the serene ride of Shinkansen while eating our Ekiben and drinking a tall can of beer..

It was really great, I could change my plans at the last minute. I calculated that I saved a chunk of money with the rail pass but I really only needed a two week pass instead of a three week pass (three week trip). Recommend it because you can travel flexibly - decide where you want to go the day before, or even the hour before. You dont have to buy tickets, just show your pass and walk through the barrier. There are cheaper ways to travel, but if you want to maximise the amount of places you can go to in Japan, the rail pass makes a massive difference.

Clearly useful to save money, but would recommend doing a bit more research than we did and planning ahead for trips, particularly day trips. For example, we decided to sort out tickets for day trips to Hakone (from Tokyo) and Hiroshima (from Kyoto)on the day. Hakone (to Odawara) we had to wait for the 3rd train whilst for Hiroshima, we had to get a smoking carriage (fortunately, we lined up early and got a seat on the unreserved carriage without smoking) as it was a busy day, and then had to return on a 3pm train otherwise we would have needed to wait until after 9pm. These may be isolated incidents, but given you can book ahead, and then change if you get there early and there are spare seats, I'd recommend some extra planning. Certainly value for money and easy to use - great for travel between Tokyo and Kyoto, and we also used from Kyoto to Kansai Airport.

RailPlus service was prompt and efficient. It was easy to get our JR Pass validated in Tokyo as long as we followed the instructions to the letter. We were lucky there was no queue, as it takes quite a long time to validate even one pass! (lots of checking of English spelling names and old fashioned stamps!) I would recommend getting seat reservations. Everything worked exactly right. Trains very comfortable and no need to get 1st class in Japan; 2nd class very comfortable and clean.

Japan rail systems seem a little crazy but if you learn to observe and read the very limited English, you will be able to make your way to your destination with much ease. Only in the past 100 years as English been added to the majority of their signage and having a Japan 7 Day Rail pass allows you to travel long distances in a very short time on the Shinkansen trains - more commonly known as the bullet trains travelling at approximately 300km/hr. Every bullet train has small vending machines on board, on route trolley service and assigned seating. Very fast trains and so neat and tidy. Highly recommend to any one travelling around Japan.

it was my first time been to japan in april 12. I Read somewhere they said you save $$$ on these tickets buying from Australia, and you can use those tickets on JR rail only. You can't use with other train companies. we paid nearly $400 each for 7 days JR ticket. Went I go to Osaka, there are 4 train companies. SO there weren't much of JR railway in the city. We had to buy train tickets for other train companies. We travelled from Osaka to Tokyo by bullet train. Turned out to be around 8000YEN ($90+) per train , return trip would cost $180. In Tokyo there are 5 train companies, and again not many JR rail , we ended up buying daily ticket to use other train network. 1000 yen ($11 day) per day. So I recommend not to get these JR tickets from Australia unless if you want to travel between cities everyday. The train system is the best over there. bullet train is very comfortable / quiet. :) can't wait to get back there again.

I felt the purchase of a Japanese Rail Pass a great way to go as I had heard that the single costs of buying train tickets was very expensive. I activated my coupon for a pass at Narita Airport which was not too complicated and was therefore able to use the Narita Express into Tokyo. As the train system is quite complicated and this pass cannot be used on the subway, it was a bit confusing as to when I could use it and so needed to study train and subway maps and compare with the information provided by the Japanese Rail Pass. Each time I used the pass I had to go through the manual check which meant sometimes having to queue.( I think having a swipe card would have been a better option). In general I felt I used up my money's worth on the 7 day pass by travelling to Kyoto and return, using the Narita Express one day, taking the train to Kamikura and using the Yamanote line on one day. As I was only in Japan for 10 days, the 7 day pass was my best option. I would recommend purchase of this pass for people travelling to Japan that intend to use the pass on most days of their trip.

The Japan Rail Pass is great for travelling between several different places. However, if you don't intend on travelling Japan much, the rail pass is not for you. There are several different transportation companies in Japan, and the rail pass can only be used on certain lines (not all). This can be inconvenient in certain places for travelling around, as you can't use all the transport (and some places are not easily accessible otherwise).

This is the third type of Japan Rail pass I've used and is best for seeing a broad area of the country not on Shinks though. Previously used a Kansai West pass for lots of travel between Nara, Kyoto & Himeji. Then the Sanyo West pass took us further afield to Fukuoka, and much faster as it includes all Shinkansens. This time we went north to Tokyo and could have gone all over riding any but the fastest Shink- the Nozomi. I do wish this pass was available for non consecutive days. With this sort of travel it is good to be able to have a couple of days in a place, but a day of not using the pass means you can easily not get good value from it. JR take note- it would be good to have a pass which offers non consecutive 'day vouchers' for all overseas visitors.
