I did three journeys on TGV trains, two single deckers and one double decker, some first class, some second class, but all with booked seats. The trains are efficient, comfortable, and were on time. The only difficulty is getting the camera to focus fast enough as the scenery wizzes by!

The TGV is a fast and efficient way to travel. Prepurchase of tickets is a must and the efficient way the train and air travel mesh with hire cars, is to be admired. Why doesn't Australia have an equivalent?

Love most of the TGVs, though the one we got from Narbonne to Toulouse on a Sunday was grotty and old, evn though we had First Class tix. As usual, someone ( French guys) sitting in our seats when we found our place, and had to explain that we had these seats booked. Alors ! They did move for us. Most other TGVS very clean and slick. Wish we had them in Austrlia.

Need to take the Paris metro on arrival in Paris by TGV? Buying your metro ticket for 2 euro from the TGV buffet car will save time & queuing with luggage, for one on your arrival. But get in early! They sell out.

This was our first trip since 1989 with a significant European rail content. It is a great way to travel. The train was very comfortable and amazingly steady as it sped along at what - say in excess of 200 km per hour. We were traveling to CDG-Roissey Airport and we were delivered straight to Terminal 2 (for those who know the airport), Highly recommended way to travel .

It was very convenient that to catch a TGV from Paris CDG airport itself direct to Strasbourg and then back. But note there are only one or two a day (the others run from stations within Paris). The Railplus booking system worked fine, providing a print-your-own ticket for the TGV. We thought we would receive this as soon as we had entered the reservation requirements into the Railplus website, but in fact the printable tickets are not provided until a few days later, once Railplus has confirmed the booking. But otherwise everything worked as clockwork. There were lifts to and from the platform, only a small step up onto the train, and shelves for heavy luggage at the end of each carriage.

We took Eurostar London/Paris Gare du Nord and connected with TGV Gare de l'Est/Strasbourg. Passengers changing from Gard du Nord to Gare de l'Est need to be aware beforehand that it may take up to 90mins to get to the front of the taxi queue at Gare du Nord. An advance print-out of a Google walking map from Gare du Nord to Gare de l'Est is essential to avoid this delay. Follow the walking map and do not take short-cuts. Short-cut involving long flights of stairs may lead to opportunistic citizens from the Sub-continent offering to carry your case downstairs and then asking for EUR10 per suitcase for some non-existant charity they claim to represent.

IN THE ELECTONIC FILE TICKET PRINTING SEQUENCE AT THE SNCF MACHINES(SEE "E-TICKET COLLECTION GUIDE) "PASSENGER NAME' IS SIMPLY YOUR SURNAME. I HAD WORRIES WITH ENTERING FULL NAME, TITLE ETC IN VARIOUS FORMS WITH NO CONFIRMATION. ALSO YOU NEED TO INSERT YOUR TICKET INTO ONE OF THE LITTLE UNOBTRUSIVE YELLOW STALK-LIKE MACHINES ON THE PLATFORM IN ORDER TO VALIDATE BEFORE BOARDING . LOOK OUT FOR "COMPOSTER" = PUNCH. AT THE STATIONS AND ON THE TRAIN OTHER PASSENGERS WERE VERY COURTEOUS AND HELPFUL. WHAT A SIGHT TO SEE A CAT ON A LEAD SITTING QUIETLY IN A CARRIAGE- ACROSS THE AISLE FROM A DOG!

The one drawback was that the machine on the train station at the Gard de L'Est refused to recognise my on line booking. Fortunately the information office issued our tickets and were most helpful but if we hadn't gone the day before to get the tickets we would have been in a panic on the day of travel as it was an early morning departure. Apart from this hiccup, from our on-line booking, I would highly recommend the TGV.The train departed on time, was fast and smooth beyond belief and the seating was spacious and comfortable. The carriage was clean and the ticketing staff were friendly and cheerful.

TGV was fast and mainly efficient. Only issue is if trains are delayed and you have connecting trips, it can add alot of time to your travel. First class upgrade is well worth it for longer trips and during busy periods. The machines are simple to use when collecting tickets that are bought ahead of time which is highly reccomended. Would definitley travel this way again.

We took the TGV from Grenoble to Paris and it was clean, fast, with comfortable seats and good viewing. You're supposed to sit in your assigned seat, but once people are on, you can move around and often find a better position - and even if someone gets on the train later, it's no big deal, you just move back to your original seat. We saw that happen quite often on our travels. They have a reasonably priced bar and food service. This is the second time we've done this trip & both were really great.

I was travelling with 2 friends and boarding a TGV on it's way to Bordeaux from Paris, One friend left her bag on the train to run back to the ticket window to validate her pass. As she was at the ticket window the train doors shut and we pulled out of the station, so my other friend and I were left with our new friends bag but no friend - we thought we were on the TGV to Bordeaux so figured she would get the next train and we would meet her at the station, little did we know we were headed to Nantes - not quite the right direction. The train stopped in Nantes and the earliest train we could get to Bordeaux left at 10am the next morning. We had no way of contacting our friend, who we had only met 1 day prior to taking this trip and who had been left to travel by herself by her brother who apon check-in in Anchorage Alaska 1 month prior had met a girl at check-in, fallen in love and decided to stay in Alaska and get married, anyways I digress. So with no way of contacting our friend we found a cheap hotel for the night. The next day we arrived in Bordeaux mid afternoon and went to the hostel that we have mentioned once in conversation the previous day hoping our friend had remembered the name and gone there herself. We got to the hostel and no sign of our friend so we went back to the station, after searching for around 2 hours we finally found her, alseep on a bench, passport gripped in her hands - it's all she had, as we had her bag, which I had managed to break the strap of after lugging it from train to train. So i guess the moral of the story is, check the destination of the train and don't jump off to validate tickets without your bag.

Its a train trip I have done on many occasions over the last 10 years. And I will do again and again! All memorable and never boring, My father and family live in a tiny village in the Loire in France called Choue, farm country where traditional French farmers still grow their produce and live the "simple" life, beautiful fields of sunflowers and narrow one lane roads. A week of too much food and wine there and I am ready to hit the beach to walk off my extra kilos! That's when I board the TGV from Vendome to Dax. (approx 4 hours) The scenery is mostly country side but the time always flies as does the TGV! Dax is the closest rail station to one of my favourite spots in the world - Hossegor. A long wide stretch of white sand that goes for miles (rare in France) an abundance of holiday makers, cute B&B's, laid beach lifestyle and much more.

The french tgv from Gare du Lyon to Dijon was first class. The Swiss train we got from Dijon to Paris was old and not so comfortable and my seat was loose. Having to pay a reservation fee for a seat on a french train, in addition to the cost of the eurail pass, seems a bit much, but so be it if the quality of the french trains are better.

We had a fairly well-worn carriage on the TGV lyria from Geneva to Paris. Service was adequate. Problems with opening & closing bathroom doors. I would prefer 1st class to Premium 1st class. After skiing Val d'Isere, I thought the higher class was a waste of money, and would have liked to catch the train from Bourg St Maurice except could not book with a Eurorail pass - you need a french pass - thought that was a rip-off, and made the journey that much longer. Next time I will review whether a Eurorail Pass is good value. The speed of the train, though, is amazing and got us quickly and safely to our destination.

Our flight was an hour late and I missed the TGV connection to Lyon and was charged full price to get the next train. Unless you are booking months in advance, I found it an expensive option to book at the SNCF office in France. I was hit no less than 3 times for $123 when I was advised that no Europass seats were available even though the carriages were half empty. There was also a reluctance by the SNCF staff to find alternative routes that would allow us to use our pass.

Moderator: "TGV services can be booked 90 days in advance and passholder fares are limited per service. Rail Plus can book this train for you in advance."

When boarding the Eurostar at Ashford International, I got on the train that I thought was going to Paris du Nord, but was in fact going to Brussels. After some confusion over my seat being 'double booked', it was realised by the manager that I was on the wrong train although we were an hour into the trip. I think the attendant who showed me to my seat and read my ticket got into trouble. Luckily I got off at Lille and the manager arranged for me to take the TGV first class to Paris Du Nord which was great!

On time performance was a bit of a problem especially if you had connections to make along the route. Also English is not spoken on most regional stations but directions and signage are clear. Its very fast and the first class seating is comfortable and the windows are large for sightseeing. All trains were very well patronised. I would definitely use the system again.

We used Rail Plus to buy train tickets from Paris to Renne where we were to collect the leased car and from Lyon Airport, where we were returning the car, to Paris. As we had reserved seats we had no problem on the crowded train. We found both journeys to be pleasant and fast. Using the trains was far quicker than trying to fly to/from the regional cities as we were leaving from the centre of Paris,Gare de Monparnasse, and arriving at the Gare du Nord. We also didn't need to be at the stations for an hour before checkin.

I booked my TGV for a trip from Nice to Paris. It involved going from Nice to lyon then changing train to go from Lyon to Paris. Booked was a 10 min changeover time at Lyon. The TGV arrived a Lyon 5 minutes late abd given that I didn't know which platform to change to etc, 5 minutes was not enough time. We made it with gret haste and being forced onto any carriage. I think when selling tickets there should be more than 10 minutes changeover allowed and warning buyers of the situation.

TGV implies a modern high speed train, but some journeys were more TER. For example the Perpignan-Barcelona journey was in an old rattler, but advertised as TGV. Similarly Nice-Marseille was not a high speed train. It's a small point but don't expect a bullet train when you book TGV

We were traveling from Paris to Nice on the TGV. Unfortunately there was a mechanical problem on our train, after trying to fix it and being unable we had to wait for another train and departed Paris 2 hours late (they did offer passangers the option to swap trains, which would have meant being on the train that left at the same time, and we were offered a refund slip to fill in which would have been convenient if we lived in Europe). Once the train departed it was a pleasent trip, we were in first class and the coach was roomy and clean, bathrooms clean and the food coach offered a large selection. If we had left on time (which it looked like everyother TGV was) ii would have rated the TGV great.

We caught the train from Avignon to Paris. The train only stops briefly and you need to be prepared to push your way on or you may be left standing on the platform. Our experience was that boarding was a bit of a scrum with people trying to get on dragging luggage and put it away in the luggage racks. It was exacerbated by the internal door trying to close on people while they were tryin to get through with bags. Apart from that, a great, relaxed trip into the centre of Paris rather than a 7 hour trip by car.

This the 3rd time we've used a railpass in Europe and found them to be a good product if you dont want the hassle of queing up for tickets and reservations at point of departure. The European rail system at the major stations intially takes a bit of getting use to when it comes to finding the platforms for depature and locating your carriage and seat on high speed and regional trains. The key appears to be give yourself enough time to get to the staion and locate the departure board and look up your train number not your arrival station. The railplus website give some good advice to manage your travel via train in Europe.

We enjoyed the TGV but make sure you have some spare time between arrival of your connection and departure time as they usually leave right on time. I think all European trains fail to deal adequately with modern luggage - especially for those of us who are travelling the world and have a full sized suitcase. Not enough easily accessed storage and the difference in height between station platforms and the train is always are problem if you don't have the physique of Tarzan

Made 2 trips on TGV - first one could have been a disaster - travelling from Marseille to Charles De Gaule - that's what ticket said but got to station only to find no train doing this!! But there was a train at the same time going from Lille to Brussels!? Yes that was the correct train - but how did we know this? Got on the correct train with 2 mins to go - would have been a disaster as this was our connection back to Australia - moral of story - ask if not sure - thank goodness we did!!Second trip no probs - generally excellent.

We had two trips on TGV. Probably the most concerning problem for us was the lack of space for our luggage. The regular users pushed to get in front as they knew that luggage space was limited. We were in no hurry and when we boarded the train there was no space for our luggage, except on the overhead racks. As we are in our 70's there was a huge physical effort to place 3 suitcases, averaging 25kg each on the rack and get them off at our departure station. Apart from these we had a very relaxing time on the TGV.

I arrived at the train station, and had to print my tickets from my email. However, being an English-speaking traveller, I was not able to understand the ticket machines. I had done my best to that point to speak French as much as possible, but for someone not fluent in French it was very confusing. It would help immensly, especially in a train station which does have so many tourists going through it, to have machines on which you can choose your language. It is also not made clear how you find the carriage number on the train, and I ended up asking two French-speaking guests to point me in the right direction. I did find out on my return journey, by asking some locals, how to find which carriage I was on. It's a good system, it's just not clear.

We opted to catch what we thought was a Eurostar from Paris to Calais Frethun. I booked first class seats, as we had been told that food and drinks were provided on a complimentary basis. As this was our first visit to France, I had no idea of the difference between a Eurostar and a TGV train. While there was a buffet on the train, this was closed - as we boarded at 1146, this was less than satisfactory. While I had read on a website that there was a bus that took passengers into Calais, no announcements were made on the train concerning connecting services. When we reached Frethun (at 1322), we discovered that there was no bus. Right at that time, a train to Calais Ville pulled in on a platform up and over the footbridge, but with a suitcase and hand luggage, etc, there was no way of catching this service. There were no more trains for two hours, so we had to catch a taxi to the Dock, because we had to check in at 1435 for the 1520 ferry to Dover. By contrast, the ferry trip across the Channel was very pleasant and this more than made up for the less than pleasant experience of the TGV.

Moderator: "It is not possible to book a Eurostar service internally within France. Eurostar is for international routes from France - UK and/or Brussels - UK."

The train doors of several carriages on arriving in Lille from Calais would not open - we had to run down the train and eventually found one that DID open. We therefore had to run in order to catch the TGV to Aix. There were no clear signs; in fact there were two signs in different directions for the same train. We arrived just as they were closing the door and were greeted by the rudest man I have EVER come across and who threatened to close the door on us. We got in the train and he was lucky to survive. We were in the wrong part of the train (it apparently split) but a very nice female employee helped us find the right part of the train in Paris.

I bought our tickets in Australia and printed off the certificate / receipt which said to exchange it at the station for 3 tickets. We got to the station in plenty of time for the journey but were unable to find somewhere open to exchange. The train was about ready to leave so we saw the staff at the train who said that we had to purchase 3 new tickets - which we did at an extra cost we didn't need. Upon speaking to other people in France they told us that this was not uncommon . It is always difficult to find someone to exchange the receipt for tickets. NOT FAIR

Moderator: "For e-vouchers you don't need to find somewhere open, as per the guide provided to you, you get your ticket from the self service machine. If you have trouble, go to the ticket counter, which was open at this time. "

As there was a strike on in France this service didn't run however Thalys Rail put on extra trains and we were able to use this service It was faster than the TGV as it ran direct to Paris

Moderator: "The strike was during October 2010"
