The experience is one I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Italy. The trains are fantastic and the service normally good. Had one delay of one hour and although we kept posted via an information board, unless you understand Italian, we were second guessing what was going on. I pre purchased the tickets in Australia and did noT have one hassle. Eurostar the only way to truly appreciate the diversity of this wonderful country. Will be back on the track of this rail system!

Enjoyed the trip Thanks . There was very little space for large luggage and everyone stormed onboard with big bags and we had to struggle to find space for our bags. It was also a bit worrying that at the in between stops that the local young people jump onboard and help others with their bags - then demand money and jump off the train before it departs . It would also be good to be able to select whether you are travelling on the seats facing the direction of travel or not - as I suffer from mild motion sickness and prefer to travel in the direction that the train is going but could not change due to the train being full. Thanks

We planned a 3 week holiday in Italy on train travel. Based ourselves at Rome, Florence. Milan & Venice. Then did day trips to the sights. From Milan- Switzerland & Monaco. From Rome - Naples (twice) & Caserta. Worked fine eg Rome to Naples is one hour. Trains run frequently and allowed us to start and finish our day to suit us. Food on board was a little disappointing. Best to eat at the stations or take your own.

We actually nearly missed the train because we couldn't find the correct plateform - it needs better signage at the Station or an information desk that wasn't a half hour wait in the queue. Great modern trains with good service. Very clean and fast. The free wifi is very good, once you figure out how to sign up with credit card if you don't own an Italian SIM phone number (very annoying). The webpage to sign up for use is also only in Italian, so I had to guess all of the info just in order to sign up - it should provide an easier way for foreign tourists to use the service. Otherwise a great train ride

One of the things against train travel in Italy is all the steps. There are at least three high steps to get onto the trains from every platform - difficult for older passengers with luggage. Most stations that we used then had a flight of steps to get off the platform. The larger cities sometimes had a lift, but many did not. There was not an escalator to be found. On the positive side, once you made it onto the train, they were very comfortable, mostly close to schedule and very fast, an enjoyable way to travel.

Travelling around Italy by train is usually pretty good, however some of the stations with multi-platforms don't always have an elevator, and it's very difficult lugging cases down and up steps. Change of trains can be very difficult when you have to change platforms (especially if your train is slightly late arriving). Try to allow a minimum of 20 minutes to transfer. If the next train arrives on the same platform you're fine, but you don't know until you get there.

Rome to Venice. E ticket machines are easy to use just follow the instructions. One tip-we found that when the machine asked for the name as on the voucher it only wanted the surname. The notice board in the main concourse area in Rome railway station advertising the departure times of trains, made it very easy to identify our train and the platform it was leaving from. Once this was esablished it was easy to go to the platform ready for the train. We were a little worried about the required change of trains at Milan because we were late arriving there however, there was no need to worry. We were directed by staff to the Milan train which was waiting for our train to arrive. Full marks to the railway train control staff over there who made it all run smoothly. Take a small case if possible as the cases travel in the baggage area at the end and middle of the carriages and this can be a tight fit. Choose your times and route carefully as the fares differ quite considerably and if you do not mind changing trains this option appeared to be a cheaper. We found this a great experience and a nice way to travel.

This is an excellent way to travel and to see some of the scenery in comfort without having to walk. Staff were courteous and helpful - just be careful. (We were 2 women travelling alone). In Milan a fellow who looked a bit like a railway worker came and grabbed my small case to put up onto the rack. I was wanting to get something out of it, but he was quite aggressive and insistent - then insisted on a tip (wanted much more than I gave) - I then had to get my case back down to get out my book. In hindsight I should have been much more assertive, but he took my by suprise. Apart from this the trip was very pleasant and the staff helpful.

IT WAS MY FIRST TRIP OVERSEAS AND I WAS ON MY OWN TRAVELLING BY TRAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME. WHEN I ARRIVED AT VERONA RAIL STATION WITH MY PRE PURCHASED RAILPLUS TICKETS I WASNT SURE OF WHICH PLATFORM TO CATCH MY TRAIN FROM - AS I WOULD BE CHANGING OVER IN BOLOGNA AND THEN AT NAPLES AGAIN TO CONNECT TO SALERNO. I HAD BEEN TOLD MANY STORIES BY MY COUSINS BEFORE THIS DAY - "DONT TRUST ANYONE AT THE STATION", "DONT TALK TO ANY ONE", "BE CAREFUL OF THE GYPSIES!" SO MANY WARNINGS WERE GOING AROUND IN MY HEAD. THEN I SAW A VERY OLD NUN WHO WAS LOOKING FOR HER PLATFORM - I WENT UP AND ASKED FOR HER HELP. SHE LOOKED AT MY TICKET AND SHE WAS GOING TO THE SAME DESTINATION AS ME (WITH THE EXACT SAME STATIONS TO CHANGEOVER AT). SHE TOOK ME BY MY ARM AND SAID I HAD NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AS SHE WOULD LOOK AFTER ME. WHEN WE REACHED THE PLATFORM SHE ASKED ME IF I HAD PRE PURCHASED MY SEAT - WHICH I HAD. SHE TOOK OUT HER TICKET AND LOOKED AT MINE - OUR SEATS WERE ACTUALLY NEXT TO EACH OTHER. WE COULDNT BELIEVE IT. A REAL CO-INCIDENCE THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET. WE ENDED UP CATCHING THE WRONG TRAIN (WE ACTUALLY GOT ON A FASTER TRAIN TO THE ONE WE HAD BOOKED) - WE REALISED WHEN THE TICKET INSPECTOR GOT ON THE TRAIN TO CHECK OUR TICKETS AND TOLD US, THAT NOT ONLY WERE WE ON THE WRONG TRAIN, BUT WE WERE SITTING IN THE FIRST CLASS SECTION, WHEN INFACT OUR TICKETS WERE FOR SECOND CLASS. BUT WE WERE IN ITALY AND THERE WAS NO WAY THAT THE INSPECTOR WAS GOING TO ARGUE WITH A NUN (AND HER COMPANION) SO HE SAID NOTHING AND NEVER CAME BACK TO MOVE US. A TRAIN RIDE WITH A VERY STREETWISE NUN THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET!!!!

We travelled on 3 trains in Italy and enjoyed all the experiences. We had a delay on one train into Milan and all the messages were given in Italian and the people sharing our cabin were non-english speakers. It was difficult to find out the reason for the delay and if there would be options for us when we missed our connection to Rome. Once we arrived in Rome a booth was set up, the staff were expecting us and swiftly arranged for us to travel on the next train just one hour later - excellent service.

Our trip was without hassles, we had anticipated problems changing trains in Rome (as we were unsure about having to go to a different platform and it being too far away to make the connection but this went smoothly and although there was only a scheduled 20 minute transit time between changing trains it was easy to do and problem free. We went from Padua via Florence to Rome, changed trains and then Rome to Naples. I wouldn't howver recommed changing at Naples onto the local Circumvesuvania train to Sorrento if you have heavy bags or a lot of luggage.

A good service from Rome to Florence, but let down by a lack of signage at Rome Station. Signage indicates that you access the respective platform for your train departure from the subway, however with 8mins to spare, we found out that this access does not occur any longer, and you have to walk along platform 24 to the very end to access your train's departure platform - we made it with 2 mins to spare in a lather of sweat from running, towing our luggage.

Having the tickets beforehand made for stress free travelling. Train stations in Italy easy to navigate as the tickets had all the information we needed. Ticket stations had long lines so would definitely buy tickets before going. Any short trips can be bought on the day and no seat reservation is required for those.

Although our trip from Paris to Rome started off very well - efficient check in and prompt departure - it deteriorated a couple of hours into the trip. Our 'fast train' not only began many unexplained stops for no apparent reason, but when it started again, it was travelling at only average non-fast train speeds. We asked for explanations but never received a satisfactory answer from the Italian staff. In the end, we arrived at Milan almost 2 hours late, missing our connection to Rome and required to purchase 4 new tickets. Most disappointing on this occasion.

The only downfall to the ride was there was no supervision during entry onto the carriages at the platform. Passenges were entrying from both sides of carriage making it difficult/messy to move in the confined space & locate your seat/baggage in its allocated area. People would budge from either side.

Travel as light as possible because it is quite a struggle lifting large heavy bags on and off the train in a limited time. Also the suitcases may have to be lifted to overhaed lugage racks- depending on the type of carriage one is travelling in.(Carry either a roll of toilet paper or tissues on every journey)

Was not happy when we had to swap trains due to an accident. Changing was not the problem but organisation of first class travellers was pretty poor. We ended up getting lost on a train with no seats and no one wanting to offer to get us to where we wanted to go. We all missed trains and one lady lost her baggage. We had only just arrived in Italy and it was pretty off putting.

Now, this was a long time ago. !! I was working for Gulf Air in Englandand won a ticket anywhere within the British Airways network in Europe. I chose the flight from Birmingham to Milan and then planned on cruising ex Venice on Costa Line. All was planned and I had to just take the train journey from Milan to Venice...simple you would think. We boarded the train , found a compartment and sat down, eagerly waiting to depart and arrive at the beautiful city of Venice. We were to have a night there before the cruise. The train departed Milan and partway through the journey, we had ticket inspectors checking our tickets. Quite normal, however, there was evidently something wrong as the ticket inspector started to talk very quickly and loudly in Italian, pointing to our ticket and trying to move us out of our seats. We thought...we arent moving ! We have paid for these seats and they are fine . He persisted and had another Italian Rail clerk assist him in trying to move us. After several minutes of them (still in Italian) insisting that we move, a passenger who spoke Italian/English, said I think you should move carriages as this train splits at the next station. You will end up in another Italian city and it will not go to Venice. Needless to say, we quickly moved as instructed, and at the next stop, watched from our compartment as the train carriages be unshackled and another engine coupled to the connecting carriage . to ours,. Off it went, leaving us peering out of the door/window, watching the carriage we were in go off in a completely different direction to Venice ! Had we not moved carriages, we may have ended up in Rome and missed our lovely cruise. ! All very exciting Angelique Baker

My husband who spoke Italian and myself thought we knew it all and that travelling around Italy by train was the easiest thing in the world - well that sort of confidence is just asking for trouble..... we had pre-purchased 1st class tickets from Milan to Venice - easy, we arrived at the station and rather than checking the train number (big mistake) we just looked at the departure times and saw Venezia at the time we were expecting to depart and happily boarded the train. It wasn't until the train left Milan and the conductor came to check our tickets that he informed us we were on the train stopping at all stations rather than the express that we had paid extra for! Oh well, it took a bit longer and taught us a lesson.

We booked travel from Venice to Vienna. This involves a 3 hour bus trip then about 4 hours on the train with a change at Villach. The bus leaves from Venezia Mestre not Venezia S. Lucia. Arriving at V. Mestre there are NO signposts to indicate where the bus service leaves from (although there are signs for bus services, these are local buses which leave from a totally different area). After asking a few locals we were directed to a location across the road from the station entrance. Again there were no signs at all to indicate this was a bus stop. However, a coach duly arrived only 2-3 minutes late. Although we had a 1st class Eurail pass, the coach is considered 2nd class, and therefore the whole booking had to be 2nd class. The coach was cramped with minimal room for hand luggage, but arrived in Villach exactly as advertised with 10-15 minutes for the connection to Vienna. I guess it would be possible to book the two legs separately and travel 1st class from Villach to Vienna, but 2nd class was fine.

Caught the train from La Spezia to Genova as scheduled. Seats were comfortable and travel was smooth. The only disappointment was that the toilets were unusable, dirty and full of paper. On another trip from Roma to Firenze we had a great time and marvelled at how fast the train travelled.

Italy, a country of immense beauty, untold History , overwhelming Art and Music, and of course Gourmet delights. - BUT upset the locals and you are in deep trouble. - Location: 2nd class Carriage complete with 4 aging Italian Nuns heading to Rome for a Papal ceremony. - well beautiful so I thought. - Anyway so the story begins.. As a Aussie Traveller and not familiar with the language or rail system, I armed myself with a 1st class ticket, complete with carriage number and of course the obligitory seat number, I made sure I was at the station in plenty of time to find the right platform , struggled with my luggage up and down stairs just so I could be ready to board and settle down - I even felt good about myself for achieving this without any assistance.. Anyway train pulls in, I check my carriage number & again struggle with my luggage to get it up into the Train which was way higher than the station, find my 4 seater compartment & seat number struggle once again to get my luggage up into the compartment rack and of course it wouldnt fit so put it in the aisle and hoped that people would understand my plight, once settled I take out my sandwich and drink and settle in for the ride. At the very next stop 4 little Nuns come in and head into my compartment. When they saw me all snuggled in and comfy they started to talk in Italian which I didnt understand, then three sat down and started talking/yelling louder and louder with their italian vocabularly, then one of them dragged my luggage which was in the Aisle out into the corridor and started getting very abusive. In the meantime tears are welling in my eyes - people from the next compartment came in and all talking at once and all together and poor little me stuck in the cetnre of a major italian war. - One of the Nuns decided then to go and get the conductor I suppose to throw me off the train as I had her seat ..- Anyway conductor came, still no English and grabbed my ticket - and then came crunch time he knew enought to let me know that I had ensconced myself in 2nd Class instead of 1st Class. - How stupid did I feel, anyway the good natured italian conductor pulled the Stop signal, we stopped at an unscheduled station - he helped me out and into the right carriage and the rest was History - as I was leaving my carriage full of Nuns, they all came and gave me a big hug and blessed me and waved me good by - that it the beautify of the Italian way. So the ending was fun, and I hold no anger except at my own stupidity for not checking the carriages correctly. SO TRAVELLERS BEWARE ON FOREIGN TRAINS. - THINGS ARE DIFFERENT. - BUT THE EXPERIENCE IS GREAT.

Spring in northern Italy...as its best! Exploring the wonderful country side by train! One could only imagine what a single young lady could experience........picture this first time to Italy, so shopping has been plentiful & bags are a little heavy - even more heavy for someone only 150cm tall & weighing only 45kgs. I arrived in one of the small country towns in northern Italy with only 10 minutes to change trains & of course platforms. So I disembark the train dragging my over sized over weight suitcase. Clunk clunk clunk down the stairs which was accomplished with some ease, but i knew the journey up the stairs was something different. Struggling & out of breath one by one they all pass - not one offer of help. Finally i make it the next platform with only seconds to spare. Running down the length of the platform dragging my suitcase....the train pulls in.....still running and loosing speed and strength.....finally get to the train door....trying with all my might to lift my case onto the train...no luck....the next time i try to pull my bag onto the train...still no luck...looking around for help....again no luck...then the whistle blows...i fall to the floor and cry....but then i hear steps....could it be......my Italian saviour....my mind starts whirling....tall, dark, handsome, northern Italian......I look up through tears what do i see...a short, older train conductor making his way to help. He throws my bag on board in rather quick and i am sure not to pleasant Italian orders me to follow and the train pulls out!

We had booked a 3 berth sleeper, but when we arrived it was only configured for 2 people.we had to wait about an hr for the conductor to return to reconfigure our berths, so we could get to sleep.

The fast trains in Italy are really cool, they depart on time even if you haven't found you seat!! Seat numbers were double numbered which caused some confusion however we had reservations so that was fine. The service was pretty average - the first class service depended on the crew. Some were OK but others weren't interested. Overall though really good.

Overall I found the Eurostar quite good if you were on the right type of carriage. However we were on a trip from Florence to Venice which was just horrendous. More people than seats in first class, bags all over the aisle. You would think on a busy tourist route they would have carriages with extra space above to place bags.

Train from Venice to Rome broke down 30 minutes before arrival-apparently an electrical problem, no communication for passengers, no air conditioning, windows /doors were not opened, toilets did not flush, delay was 3 hours- disgraceful. We missed our booked appointment for our accommodation. A bottle of water was offered as we disembarked in Rome. Insufficient storage areas for luggage was an issue on all 3 trains.

Moderator: "We are sorry to hear of your train service issue while in Italy. We will pass your comments onto the Railways so they can improve communication if this is to happen again."
