Need to travel extensively or long distances to get the cost benefit, expecially without the 2-for-1 offer.

Much the easiest way to travel by Swiss train, bus, boat. No pre planning of itineraries required, or tickets to purchase. Possible exception some private railways, e.g. Jungfrau only give say a 25% discount on normal rates.

The Swiss Pass gives travel & entertainment in one package. The train system is very reliable. We printed out timetables before we left. The boats and buses are an extra bonus. We were able to get wherever we wanted with 50% reductions on the mountain lifts. This was the fourth time we have purchased a Swiss Continuous Pass.

I think it is good if you are going to do a lot of travel by train throughout Switzerland as well as spending quite a bit of time in cities where you might use buses, trains and trams. Also valuable if you are keen on visiting museums. It can be used for special tourist train trips such as the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express which would otherwise be quite expensive. For these you still have to pay a booking fee. We felt it was value for money but you need to use the train services to make it worthwhile.

On a family holiday driving around the Swiss Alps at our own pace and taking the scenic route by following the GPS. We had just left Interlaken and we were heading for the Italian border via Zermatt and the Matterhorn. The GPS voiced by John Gleese was telling us to drive about 15kms down the road and then take the ferry. Now we were in the middle of Switzerland....where is the ferry?? Anyway, we followed the instructions of the GPS and turned into a side road to catch this ferry. We came to a toll booth and paid 25Euros and we were given an instruction booklet. Only one page out of a dozen was in English and the instructions read; drive onto the train, put the car in first gear, put the hand brake on and turn the car off and wait. So it was not a ferry as we would know cruising along Sydney Harbour it was a train. I followed the car in front and we waited for this train. About 10 minutes later an old rusty train came out of the tunnel and we prepared to drive onto the train. Again I followed the car in front and did what the instructions detailed. My husband stupidly left his window down but by the time we realised what was happening it was too late and we were on the move. This train was old looking, had a roof and railings and that was all that was protecting us and we had to stay in the car. As we started off we thought this is not too bad until we entered the tunnel in front of us. 21 Miles of pitch black tunnel with periodic lighting and a 1200metre incline. As trains go is was pretty rough and when you are sitting in a car with just a hand brake holding you in place it was pretty nerve racking. My two young kids in the back seat thought it was fantastic. It was a great way to get to where we needed to go and we did it again on a different ferry a couple of days later. A different but great experience.
