We had just arrived at Madrid Train station after a nice long journey from Barcelona and were bracing ourselves for a good night sleep in our own private cabin. Having been denied an overnight bed we were excited that we got our own couchette. The two of us made ourselves comfy and lay down for some shut eye using our backpacks for pillows. CRASH!! Rubbing my eyes I looked over to where the sound came from. TICKETS PLEASE! We had reached the Portuguese border. We handed over our Eurail passes and then went back to sleep. BANG BANG CRASH. The door swung open again. What now?? My friend Georgie and I were both now wide awake as cardboard boxes started being piled into our cabin! Bags and boxes followed by more bags and boxes were being kicked into our cabin. A family of 6 followed the exuberant quantity of luggage that was being squeezed into a 6 person couchette. So much for a good nights sleep! The 8 of us were sardined in the cabin at 3am in the morning along with boxes and bags under our feet. Our new "friends" were heading home to Lisbon. I had finally drifted off again when I was once again woken, this time to two people kicking me whist fondling each other. We are still unsure to this day if they were male or female or one of each! Sleeping was now impossible as they all started chugging down bottles of table wine. As the sun came up and we rolled into Lisbon, we happily farewelled our new train buddies ready to head into Lisbon smelling like the "yummy" table wine that had been splattered on us as the fondlers "carefully" disposed of their almost empty bottles under the seats. As we got off the train we recognised the Portugese words for Mother and Father as the fondlers got told off by their Parents for littering. Welcome to Portugal...

Overall an enjoyable trip but, more information needed regarding where you can go from point a to point b more clearly. Also some of the trains were in quite poor condition eventhough we paid for 1st class.
