My friend & I boarded what we thought was the fast & most direct train from Lisbon to Faro in Portugal only to soon discover we were on the train that stopped at every station. We were traveling 2nd class (all we could afford) and stopped at a station where we discovered we had a 3 hour wait for the next train. After much difficulty in communicating we learnt there was a village within walking distance so off we set. We were well off the beaten track & felt like we had stepped back in time with all the locals putting heads out there windows to check out the tourists not to mention the donkey "in" the local shop!!!(We don't think they had seen foreigners before). We soon returned to the station which had a type of bar (alcohol could be purchased) that included the local drunk. We managed to get the message over that it was my birthday and so with that the local drunk disappeared and came back with a birthday cake. All this amazing experience before our next train came and we continued our journey with more locals on board and lots of singing and Happy Birthday's!!! This took place in 1980 and still a very fond memory of my train travels in Europe, I still to this day do not know the name of this village we stopped in. Needless to say there is more to this story but would take more than 500 words!!!!!
