I loved the high speed trains - especially the one between Rome - Naples and Venice - Florence. The regional trains are getting old and need an update, but beside that they suited our needs well.

Validating pass at Rome Termini station took a long time and although we had left over an hour to do this before catching our reserved train we almost missed it. Very stressful. We also ended up with a day left on the pass. A miscalculation with no refund.

The Italy Eurail Pass is easy to use and saves a lot of money, especially if two or more are travelling together. You can pre-book seats through your travel agent for a fee. Alternatively, you can do what we did and booked our seats at the station before you travel - booking fees vary from 2-10Euro depending on whether you are travelling on regional trains or the faster intercity or Eurostar.

Important to follow recommendations for reserving seats ASAP for VFT but I thankfully I had also reserved a seat for the 7 hour trip from Torrino to Rome on a regular train - many were standing with all trains booked out that day. The rail system in Italy is very efficient. Signage at Rome Termini was a little deficient to go to airport with a lack of follow up signs but people were helpful.

John Ilhan's last rail journey before he passed away is the most memorable that I can remember, he and his wife Patriacia dined out on the story frequently afterwards and could then laugh about it - It all began when the Concierge from the Tuscan Villa that they were staying at did not allow enought time to get the family and their suitcases onto the train before it departed Florence for Naples. Patricia and the 3 young children and their Nanny rushed to board the train - the Concierge was attempting to get their suitcases on board when the train took off leaving Crazy John on the platform with 15 suitcases lined up beside him as the children waved goodbye thru the window. Patricia was on board with NO tickets and No money, the Inspector did not believe her story, he radioed thru to the Station Master to ask if the story was true and if the family really did have tickets - the Station Master confirmed the story - Whilst the childern started crying for their Dad, John instructed the Conciege to drive him as fast as he could on the motorway so that he would get to Naples ahead of the family , this he did with a luggage van following - That was Crazy John's one and only European rail trip - The moral of the story for clients is to allow plently of time to get to the station and hence have what should be a very relaxing train journey -

Its Midnight at the Rome Central railway station the train is shunting into position for the journey to Brindisi Im glad I have a first class Eurail pass with reserved seating as the economy class hordes are throwing suitcases thru economy class windows to secure a position on those carriages even though the train is still backing up We board the first class carriages and find Im seated in a 6 seat compartment the only other passenger is an elderly chap who is almost asleep we are joined by 2 couples so we really cannot stretch out but there is still plenty of room As the train departs and we settle for the long journey I realise that if the elderly gentleman sitting opposit me by the window would move his outstretched legs to the right then I can do the same realising he was still awake I got brave and taped him in one of his knee to my horror it was a wooden knock Through the laughter that followed, other couples they translated that this italian gentleman had lost his leg during the war we eventually struck up a friendship in a pidgeon English but I will never forget it

I recommend the train travel to this magical place in Italy. The train travels along the beach coast in the northern Liguria of Italy. Amongst the journey there are olive groves, enjoy seeing the locals and experience the feeling of the Orient Express. Very wide windows and the train has an old feeling about it. The train stops along the way of the breathtaking cities of the Cinque Terre being Levanto. Monterosso, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Departing early in the day, explore one city by foot and then jump back on the train to discover another city. Admire the homes along the cliff edges and the Ligurian Sea. A truly unforgetable experince that I shall treasure for life. Susie

One of the conductors was rather rude to us because we inadvertently had not entered the date on the ticket. He threatened to charge us E50 each but eventually backed down and wrote the date in for us.

Moderator: "As per the terms on the pass cover you must enter the date in the box on the pass before you board the train. Otherwise you can be removed and fined."

At 17 years old my friend and I were taking our first trip to Europe. We had been staying with a family in Italy that lived near Grosseto and decided to take the train to Rome (only takes approx. 2 hours) for the day. After an eventful day seeing the sights in Rome we were exhausted- so exhausted that we dozed off on the train! I don't know how or why but by some miracle we both woke up just as we heard the train drive announce we were at Grosseto Station! We leapt up out of our seats, scrambled to the doors and tried desperately to open them! But, alas, they wouldn't budget. We had sudden thoughts of not being able to get off when I decided to try to doors that opened onto the railway tracks. These one's worked??? So, we jumped out onto the tracks, missing the train coming in the opposite direction by no more than 30 seconds! A bit of a hairy ending to the day, but a good tale to tell!

My first experience for rail in Europe was Trenitalia on a five day Italian adventure with my sister and a friend. Our first train from Rome to Florence was beautiful and new and exactly what you'd expect from a European train so we had no qualms about hopping back on in Florence to go to Venice although we did wonder why the station smelt so bad. Our second train was so old we half expected Fred Flintstone to be running it along from the front! Everything was wood and there were little cabins for everyone. The shock came about halfway through when I needed to go to the bathroom. I headed down the rickety old carriage to the toilet and nearly fell as I entered so I didn't immediatly notice my surroundings., On closer inspection I found a wooden old toilet which when you looked through it you could see the tracks speeding by underneath, no wash basin or anything else. Needlese to say I held on until Venice and made sure I didn't drink much for the rest of my Italian train journey! And it is a very good warning for any clients travelling to Italy on just what you might get. (I have loads more rail stories from Europe but I'll never forget seeing the tracks of the train speeding by and the realisation as to just why the Florence train station smelt so terrible)

Don't know if we saved money or not but on two different days of travel, we had chosen, via the web, the longest possible wY to reach our destination. This was unavoidable when unfamiliar with the routes we were taking. We trusted the web site to direct us in the most direct route, this did not happen. Consequently, we spent twice as long traveling to the same destinations, and unsure but probably more money than necessary, if you count the booking fees and reservations for more trains than needed???

After lining up for an hour to get the pass activated, paid $20EU to reserve a seat and asked the clerk what we had to do next - he said go to platform 9 and go to carriage 1. So, as instructed we did. Ticket inspecter comes along, we show the passes and get told we're being fined $50EU - absolutely crazy. Justification was that "it's very clear and easy to understand that you had to write the date in the box". If it's so easy to understand then why were 4, that's right 4 (!) other people in the SAME carriage as me that got the same fine and went through the same process. Not so easy is it. Yes, I didn't fill in the box, however where was the helpful Customer Service from the clerk (the one that stamped the pass and filled it in) to take just 5 seconds to say "Don't forget to mark the box here (pointing out where to mark) with today's date BEFORE getting on the train.", it would have really made my first trip to Europe that much more enjoyable.

Moderator: "I am sorry to hear of the lack of customer service. Rail Plus provides information on validating your pass in the Eurail Guide that came with your pass, also there is a yellow sticker on the pass cover informing passengers to read the conditions on the inside ticket cover (step 4) and we also enclose an 'Important Information' sheet with all documents."
