Used the 5 day pass on TGV & TER in France & AVE in Spain and saved a few hundred dollars in fares. You have to book a seat nowadays on TGV & AVE, so not as simple as it used to be when you could arrive at the station and step onto the first train.

This pass suited us as we only required 5 days of train travel within France and Spain. It was good that we had the pass as on 2 days of travel we didnt catch the trains we had planned (due to train strikes and cancelations of trains) so it was easy for us to get assistance at the train stations and rebook onto another train or get the regional trains for no reservation cost.

During May/June 2011 (over 18 days)we took a six day rail pass travelling from Paris to Barcelona staying in Dijon, Avigion, and Montpillier on the way. After time in Northern Spain we railed from San Sebastian to Lourdes and back to Paris. Most convenient and comfortable way to travel in 1st class rail. Found rail staff very helpfull in all cities. We did all our own research on line thru Railplus before making our bookings again on line. All accommodation was booked before leaving Australia staying in hotels all in walking distance to railway stations without any problems. We hope to rail again to other locations thru France in 2013. Perhaps the only issue was luggage space as trains were full and difficult obtaining space Its the way to go thanks Railplus.
