The difficulty of all train travel especially in Italy is luggage ie getting up from the platform to the train. Best to travel light if you can. There is always storage but the steps up and down with heavy luggage makes it a bit hard.

We used the train every couple of days. Never had a problem finding the right trains, they are always on time. Going by train you get to see other parts of the country. Only thing I would suggest is to book your seats the day before.

As a female it was difficult to get my luggage up and down steps of trains, folding ramps would be better, apart from that I enjoyed the train trip immensely and I highly recommend it.

We found our seven train journeys in France and Italy great with thw one exception. The Artesia night train Paris to Venice was poor not only was it five hours late into Venice it stayed at one station for nearly four hours, its dinning car was dirty , the tables not cleared and it ran out of food and dirnk, and did not replenish supplies even though it stopped at stations latter on for twenty minutes at a time.. The staff were unhelpful and would give no explaination for the delay. I would recomened that people traveling on this train have there own back up food and drink which is allowed,we would not take this train again. All our other train trips on the TGV and Trenitalia trains were brillant, left on time and arrived on time great clean trains with helpful staff. When we went to bring the departure time forward of one train it was no problem just paid the small fee and off we went, I would recommend these trains and are looking forward to the next time.

People buying this pass should be aware that if you want to travel on TGV or Intercity trains you have to book a reserved seat and there are not a lot of spaces held for Eurail holders. A couple of times I was told that the train was full only to discover that if I had wanted to buy a normal ticket I could have got on that train. I also found it cheaper to buy a ticket for a shorter journey rather than use a day on the pass. Also bear in mind that in Italy it will cost 10 euros to reserve a seat on any train that requires it. Eurail need to tell conductors not to punch the pass, there was hardly anything left of my ticket after so many conductors punched it!

Moderator: "Passholder fares are limited and do sell out. Booking locally in Europe close to the trains departure date can see pax having to pay a full fare and not a passholder fare. We advise to prebook before you leave Australia and as far in advance as possible. Trains can be booked 90 days in advance on most routes. "

The Eurorail pass is a great convenience for those who travelled multiple countries via trains. Going around in train is certainly the way to go about Europe. However, the railpass is actually NOT yielding much savings - and considering how few seats are allocated for passholders - it is probably better off to book the trains in advance for cheaper seats.

THE FRENCH SECTION WAS EASIER WITH MORE PLATFORMS HAVING INDICATORS ON THEM SHOWING WHERE YOUR COACH NUMBER WOULD STOP ON THE PLATFORM. IN BOTH COUNTRIES IF THERE WAS SOMEONE IN YOUR RESERVED SEAT THEY VACATED THEM STRAIGHT AWAY - THINK THEY MAY HAVE BEEN FRIGHTENED OF RAMIFICATIONS FROM THE AUTHORITIES. SHOULD BE CAREFUL AS TO HOW MUCH LUGGAGE YOU TAKE WITH YOU AS SOME TRAINMS ONLY HAD OVERHEAD LUGGAGE RACKS - SO IF YOU HAVE HUGE AND HEAVY CASES YOU COULD BE VERY INCONVENIENCED. FINALLY AN AMAZING TALE - WHILST SEARCHING FOR MY SEAT ON A TRAIN LEAVING SANTA MARGHERITA FOR MILAN I WAS SHOCKED TO BE GREETED BY A COLLEAGUE FROM MY HOME TOWN I'VE KNOWN FOR 25 YEARS WHO WAS IN THE SEAT NEXT TO MINE

Trying to book a reserved seat via the internet was a task of such Herculean complexity and complication as to render the exercise a whimper inducing challenge of considerable irritation and frustration, that at times put the computer in danger of being hurled out the window. There were times when periods of travel were 'unavailable' either too far in advance or too near in proximity to the date of booking, the site navigation was obscure, circuitous and non-friendly. Our only criticism therefore was booking a seat via the internet - torture by any other name, and easily fixed I should have thought.

One time we boarded a Eurostar train from Verona to Venice without reservation, thinking that it was a typical regional train. Our Flexible-pass did not include this. The charge on ticket inspection on the train was 18 euro per person. Make sure you check the small symbols on the destination boards at the station.

Couldnt use the pass for all journeys which really suprised and annoyed me. We couldn't use it for two of our ttrips in France and because of this we ended up with un used trips on our pass.
