Shhh I whispered to my 4 year old, the elves will hear you. Be quiet as a mouse.... and so she was, staring out the bus window from Helsinki Airport to the train station, she knew her destination was finding Santa Clause on the Arctic Circle. As we walked down the old platform she saw for the first time a magnificent train with bellowing white steam out the engine and small blocks of windows as far as the eye could see......and so we boarded the "Arctic Express". As we made our way to the little cabin with the snug little beds in blue linen she searched every tiny corner for an "elf"....."is Santa on this train Mummy?" she whispered and I replied that the train was our magic train that was going to take us top see him. We packed our stuff in that little magical cabin and walked through the corridors in amazement to the dining cart where we bough 2 big cups of hot hot chocolate and 2 big chocolate chip cookies. As we munched and sipped we gazed out the magic train at the snow capped trees and the landscapes of frozen powdery hay rolls......... we were going to see Santa Clause and this old but magnificent train was taking us there. I had to pinch myself, this is what dreams are made of, seeing my little girls face in wonder, the train belloed along round a corner we looked out to see ,a herd of reindeer in a farm paddock "just like the movie Mummy!!" she said, it was amazing. We slept tightly in our little blue cabin with our little yellow sink peeking here and there for something to wake us from this dream, at 6am we woke up hoping to see the Aurora Borealis shimmering from sky to sky in a colourful dance you can only see in a picture.........but this could just be real, this was the Polar Express, we were on it, we were there!! We spotted a giant snowman as the train pulled in to Rovaniemi station and as I lifted my little girl out on to the platform we turned once more to look in awe at this train with all it's beauty and secrets almost silent now, no more steam, no more tik ta tick, tik ta tick of the carriages, just a majestic engine sleeping now, holding the secrets of the magic it has brought to many many children for many years, and their families .As it had forever grinded and puffed it's way from Helsinki to Rovaniemi to share Santa Clause with the world......... just for a moment I could have sworn I saw an elf smiling in enjoyment as he saw the look on my daughters face know she was brought here to this special place safely and securely just like in a dream.............but this was real, this was the journey of a lifetime. I will never ever replace that 12 hours as long as I live, that was true beauty, like a fairy tale. My daughter really did sip hot chocolate on a steam train heading to see Santa Clause..................... I recommend you do the same, and when you walk down that platform and see that train, relish every second, because the magic may just never come in that form again.
