When we planned our WHITE Christmas in Europe my husband and I were so excited to imagine snow flakes falling on our faces on Christmas day, we started our adventure in Prague 14 December 2007 to our dismay on arrival there was no snow even though it was freezing cold, 19 December we boarded our Avalon Cruise and sailed to Vienna, there was a thin coat of snow and lots of ice in the towns we visited, hence the sore backsides from constantly slipping. I had pre booked a train from Vienna to Salzburg and was a little apprehensive about carting luggage etc, we were amazed at the ease of travelling this way one step up and our luggage was secured our 2 seats in First Class awaited us, the compartment was relatively full until the conductor came through and turfed about 15 people who had economy tickets down to the appropriate compartment, (that was such a giggle) about 30 minutes outside of Vienna sitting back in the warmth and comfort of the train the whole scene outside started to change it was the most magnificent stunning landscape I had ever seen, thick snow covered the ground the beauty of the brightly coloured chalet type houses, the mountains in the background with the branches of the trees weighing heavy from the weight of the snow. Finally we found what we had wanted to experience, the absolute beauty of Europe in Winter, we both agreed had we flown this sector we would have forgone the most beautiful part of our entire journey . the memory of this rail journey will remain with us forever. I would imagine the only way the see the absolute beauty and the True Australia in comfort and style one would have to travel by rail, Yes thats on my list of things to do. Kind Regards Alice

I was actually travelling around Europe on Busabout however on the way to Salzburg from Viena on the early morning departure I realised I had left a couple of valuables in the safe at the hostel ... eticket, foreign currency (this was before the euro so had a few different currencies with me) and my mobile phone just to name a few, so as soon as we arrived at the hostel in Salzburg I was on the train back to Vienna ... I dont remember the journey too much on the way over as was a bit anxious to get my stuff, however on the return I remember the scenary just being amazing! The Austrian Houses the farms it was just beautiful I was blown away as all we had ever seen on the bus ride was the auotbarns and made me realise what I was missing out on! I really believe me leaving my stuff behind that day was a blessing in disguise and often tell this story to customers to make them aware of what value rail can add to a holiday!
