The best train journey I have ever taken was a couple of years ago when we travelled from Zurich through to Innsbruck in December stopping along the way at Interlaken , Zermatt and St Mortiz.
We prebooked our trains and reserved seats to ensure we made the most of the 2 weeks by arriving into each town during daylight and primarily to guarantee we had seats on the Glacier Express.
Travelling by train is the best way to see Switzerland and Austria as the scenery is superb and you could sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.
Of course the trains were punctual as we were in Switzeralnd and naturally we enjoyed comfortable hotels that were well located in walking distance from the stations and town centre.
From Interlaken we travelled by train up to the top of the world at the Jungfrau and in Zermatt took the chairlift up to view the Matterhorn. At St Moritz we walked the town searching for the rich and famous and ended the day with a horse drawn carriage ride down the mountain.
I cannot recommend the Glacier Express highly enough as the train ploughed through the snow splattering the windows with ice crystals which enhanced the view of magical scenery of snow covered highland villages and mountains.
We ended our journey in Innsbruck where the old city is easily accessible and hosts the winter Yulefest festivities of mulled wine and night markets which are open until late each night. During the day you can chose from 5 different ski resorts all 10-20 mins by coach or train from the city centre.
It was the best White Xmas experience I have ever had and I would highly recommend you take the same journey!
